Review

"An important book."--Fareed Zakaria"Insightful and influential."--Newsweek"An acclaimed bestseller in 2007, and already a set text in development courses worldwide, Paul Collier's The Bottom Billion has far from exhausted its potential to change the way we think about, teach about, and legislate about global poverty...Its policy recommendations, many of which focus on empowering domestic actors, including through voluntary international standards to serve as rallying cries for reform movements, are not only pragmatic but also addressed squarely to the audience that matters most: the G8. It does not hurt its crossover appeal that The Bottom Billon is a model of good writing for the public understanding of social science."--Ethics & International Affairs (publication of the Carnegie Council)"Excellent...his key recommendations are right on the mark, and his message should resonate in the development discourse for years to come...Highly recommended."--CHOICE"This is a path-breaking work providing penetrating insights into the largely unexplored borderland between economics and politics."--George Soros"One of the most important books on world poverty in a very long time."--Richard John Neuhaus, founder of First Things Magazine"Provides a penetrating reassessment of why vast populations remain trapped in poverty, despite endless debate over foreign aid policy among wealthy countries and institutions."--Barbara McDougall, Jury Chair, The Lionel Gelber Prize, and Canada's Former Secretary of State for External Affairs"Workable development ideas are hard to find, but Professor Collier may have identified the next frontier for positive change."--Tyler Cowen, The New York Times"This slip of a book is set to become a classic of the 'how to help the world's poorest' genre. Crammed with statistical nuggets and common sense, his book should be compulsory reading for anyone embroiled in the hitherto thankless business of trying to pull people out of the pit of poverty where the 'bottom billion' of the world's population of 6.6 billion seem irredeemably stuck."--The Economist"If Sachs seems too saintly and Easterly too cynical, then Collier is the authentic old Africa hand: he knows the terrain and has a keen ear. As Collier rightly says, it is time to dispense with the false dichotomies that bedevil the current debate on Africa. If you've ever found yourself on one side or the other of those arguments - and who hasn't? - then you simply must read this book."--Niall Ferguson, The New York Times Book Review"Rich in both analysis and recommendations...Read this book. You will learn much you do not know. It will also change the way you look at the tragedy of persistent poverty in a world of plenty."--Financial Times"Terrifically readable." --Time.com

For anyone who has ever visited a "failed state", an awful lot of Paul Collier's observations will resonate. What he accomplishes in this short and brilliant book is to put the phenomenon into context in an understandable way. While I think his proposed remedies may fall short, I feel I have gained a new clarity about the problem of those who are left behind in the new global economy, the ones who seem unable to break out of stagnation or precipitous decline (i.e. the bottom billion).Collier sees a series of serious obstacles (or "traps") that the bottom billion face. First, there is conflict: most of these countries are threatened with violence either from without or within. War is obviously detrimental to economic development, in particular as the bottom billion tend to get caught in the negative feedback loop of funding the military only to become victims of coups. Second, the possession of raw materials - the "natural resource trap" - does not help: not only they can they divert attention from necessary reforms, but they raise the value of local currencies, thereby choking off diversification of nascent sectors in the economy, e.g. manufacturing. Third, the bottom billion tend to be landlocked and hence dependent on neighbors, with whom they must intimately cooperate and coordinate. Fourth, they tend to suffer from chronic bad governance and poor policy choices. While brave reformers may emerge, Collier notes, they need skilled administrators and time to implement policies, both of which are rare to come by or sustain; indeed they often end up in exile or prison.Unfortunately, Collier observes, the tools for climbing out of this configuration of traps - many countries suffer from more than one, most of them in Africa - are difficult to apply. Aid can help to promote growth, but cannot suffice without private sector involvement; it is also subject to both diminishing returns and the habit of helping countries that are already doing pretty well. Furthermore, efforts to correct trade policies, in particular by tariff incentives against Asia that would nurture their manufacturing bases, are very difficult to implement, not to forget agree upon. This leaves military intervention for purposes of promoting stability and the formulation of "charters", new laws, and international regimes to promote development - also extremely problematic in any practical sense.Collier comes up with a combination of these remedies that I find unrealistically hopeful: charters (e.g. investment protocols for private investors), selective foreign military interventions in the service of regional stability, trade protection from the Asian manufacturing juggernaut, and specific types of aid (helping the worst off, taking more risks for innovative policies, the provision of able administrators in the crucial first years, and the like). Moreover, Collier suggests that a coalition of NGOs, governments, businesses, and governments must act in concert, with common goals and methods. It is very difficult for me to see how all of these forces could align in any sustained manner, particularly in the current political climate that seems to fall back on populist nationalism, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try. A review this short cannot do justice to the breadth of Collier's vision, of course. Nonetheless, as he makes clear, many of these policies require massively complex coordination, not just globally but also regionally, according to which nation-states would agree on goals and pursue them, such as the development of logistical infrastructure in the furtherance of international trade. Would Nigeria by willing to invest in ports so that Niger could ferry its manufactured products to China?Recommended with enthusiasm. This book is essential to understanding international economics that takes politics into consideration.

I had to buy this book for class. I think that it is wonderfully written and definitely gives you insight into how undeveloped navigates and increasingly global and competitive economy. Often times the news makes is seen very black and white. If a nation would just do this it would succeed if " "if a nation would raise wages or invest in tech it would do better." The truth of the matter is, it really isn't that simple and there are a lot of factors that cause those in the "bottom billion" to struggle. This book really does highlight those issues in a way that is easy to understand, but also gets you thinking. I would recommend this book if you have any interest in international business, economics, politics or studies. It gives really good insight that may otherwise be glossed over in a class or on TV.

Already ten years old this book is still worth a read since the details are most likely still relevant to the bottom billion and perhaps others besides. In particular I note the relevant similarities to my own State of Alaska which is primarily a resource extracting state and has some of the characteristics of failing countries that Dr. Collier describes - though certainly Alaska has succeeded in saving funds for the rainy day we are in now due to the drop in oil prices. This book is loaded with detailed economic research. One thing I did notice missing though was information on global warming and its impact on those bottom billion - but this book was published in 2007 and I think much of the data on warming and its devastation of economies in those areas of Africa and the Middle East which elsewhere I read leads to migration and civil war over resources certainly should be part of this book if it is updated any time soon. On the whole the book is of course very negative in outlook though the last bit contains suggestions in each area discussed in the book regarding what we can do to help though of course in explaining each of these areas of concern Paul Collier and his assistants have done a pretty thorough job of explaining how difficult all of those ideas would be to put into place. Still, very informative and interesting.

Review

"I have to thank God on my knees that Oppenheimer's book did not exist at the time I made my decision to become a filmmaker. I might have become a volcanologist instead." Werner Herzog, Film director and producer"With his characteristic sparkling brilliance, Oppenheimer expertly recasts the latest scientific findings on how volcanoes work as a compelling and readable account that conveys the enduring human fascination for Nature's fiery outbursts and their capacity to transform life on this planet." Professor Iain Stewart, Geologist and BBC TV presenter"In his explosive book Clive Oppenheimer brilliantly shows how the history of volcanoes and people is a tangled account. From our earliest ancestors to travellers battling with the effects of ash clouds on airline flights, our evolutionary destiny has been played out in the shadow of volcanoes, often with disastrous results." Professor Clive Gamble, Archaeologist, Royal Holloway, University of London"This is forensic geology in the widest sense and an exciting guided tour of the major volcanic and climatic disasters experienced by human kind. Oppenheimer has a rare talent for bringing the science and history together in a clear and engaging way." Professor Michael Rampino, Geologist, New York University"Writing in his inimitably lively and witty style, Clive Oppenheimer takes us through deep time and deep into volcanoes, teaching us how they work and demonstrating how powerful eruptions have often jostled the human toehold on survival. This tour de force is an astonishingly provocative roadmap to the once and future history of Earth." Dr. Dave Pieri, Volcanologist, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory"Oppenheimer romps through the geological past, detailing some of the major volcanic events and their global impact. ... well worth diving into." Kate Ravilious, New Scientist"The hellfire-and-brimstone case studies ... seem like a product of a Hollywood screenwriter's imagination ... only they describe real events." Laurence A Marschall, Natural History October 2011"Set out to make the average reader's murky perception of volcanoes a bit clearer, and managed to write a compelling tome fit for any to enjoy, coming as close to brilliant storytelling as a scientist is able...The more dry explanations were succinct, the exciting bits explored thoroughly and boredom averted completely. Oppenheimer made his prose modern by drawing comparisons with carefully chosen pop culture terms and euphemisms that should stay relevant for some time to come. 5 OUT OF 5 STARS" Meredith Greene, San Francisco Book Review"Oppenheimer uses all sorts of evidence to unravel the stories behind some of the greatest and most significant volcanic cataclysms. ... I recommend Eruptions That Shook the World" Don L. Anderson, Physics Today"...Oppenheimer explores the entanglement of human history and volcanic activity with rare and insightful brilliance....This book should be on the shelves of all volcanologists, historians, and environmental planners. It is a lively read for all citizens concerned with human futures." -T. L. T. Grose, CHOICE

I purchased the Kindle version. I skimmed and read several parts of it and then returned it — but only because it’s not what I was looking for.I never feel it’s fair to downrate a book just because the author didn’t write the book I expected, and I actually endorse most of the highly positive reviews for this book. It is very readable for a textbook, and provides a lot of interesting information about exactly how volcanoes work (as best we know). For instance, he goes into quite a bit more detail than anything else I’ve read so far (and I love geology) about how magma changes underground, how volatile components like water and gases interact with liquid magma, and how this process can trigger an eruption. Also for instance, I knew that when magma melts, the minerals with the lowest melting point melt first, but it had not previously dawned on me that this means when magma crystallizes, the minerals with the *highest* melting point crystallize first. (Common sense, but no one had ever pointed it out!)A big part of the book is on how volcanoes of various types affect climate, economics, and history, and what this means for our potential future. Many of the issues are complex, and there’s considerable debate on many of them, but Dr. Oppenheimer goes into detail on historical case studies, explains all sides clearly, and tells you what he thinks is most important. I was impressed. (I have an advanced degree in biological sciences, by the way, but I’ve studied a fair amount of geology along the way.)I was actually looking for a comprehensive tour of all the great volcanoes of history, so this book didn’t meet my needs. The information on how volcanoes work and how they can affect the world was excellent, but if anyone is familiar with the basics and wants a travelogue, this isn’t it.I took a star off my rating because there were parts of the Kindle edition that were seriously annoying. (Again these aren’t the fault of the author.) First, the photos in this book were TERRIBLE and well below the standard of current technology. They were tiny (a couple of inches wide), fuzzy, and all black and white. It was very hard to see what they were supposed to show. I certainly hope the photos in the printed edition were much better. Second, for some reason, the photo captions were in text identical in size and font to the book text — making them hard to differentiate — but any mathematical or other equations were in type so extremely tiny that they were nearly invisible. Literally all I could see was a thin, bumpy line of gray. These are both problems with the Kindle formatting, and whoever made them come out this way should be made to do them over and do it right.

This book is pretty technical. It's written at the level of a college freshman geology text, but without the formulas. The good is that there is a LOT of information, very interesting information. But if you're wanting light reading it may not be good for you. Personally, I really enjoyed it. The way I enjoyed it was to skip a few parts, especially the ones covering the details of ancient civilizations. Although the author is clearly interested in this historical detail, I thought it had little to do with volcanology.I would recommend this book to someone who wants to learn more than what an overview would provide. Perfect for the amateur or arm chair geologist, but again, it's not light reading. However, you feel like you definitely know more when you get to the end.

This book is about the make-up of volcanoes and explains what volcanic terms mean for the parts of the volcanoe. (e.g. ash, plume, forensic volcanology etc.) Good reference. Doesn't specifically address historic volcanoes by chapter, but references volcanic eruptions throughout the book as parts of a volcano are being autopsied.

This book explains the mechanics of volcanoes; the causes of eruptions, the various types of eruptions, and the effects of past eruptions on human societies. The author also suggests possible actions to mitigate the effects of future eruptions at vulnerable locations, such as Naples, Italy, and various locations on the West coast of the United States. One caveat: if you buy the Kindle edition, as I did, the various charts are unreadable. The Kindles pixel definition is insufficiently fine grained to render the charts readable, even with a magnifying glass!

This is a very entertaining and informative history of volcanic eruptions, both famous (e.g., Sambora and Vesuvius) and obscure (e.g., the Laacher See) and their impacts on the environment and human history. The only drawback is that the background Oppenheimer provides on scientific methodologies and mathematical analyses used to measure the intensity and nature of the eruptions makes for occasional hard going for the general reader, but this excellent book is definitely worth the effort.

The author is an awsome authority of international connections as to what volcanoes do to the earth and how life is influenced by them. The story is well researched and referenced. It is a wonder how life continues on this restless earth and the atmoshere above it. It is reassuring that geologists internationally are collaborating with historians to understand nature. We are given some idea how fragile surival is and how we still have hope to survive. The reader can be lifted into an exciting realm of scientific research, mixed with other disciplines on a scholarly level.

This book is not tales of specific eruptions. It is an excellent tour of volcanism, history, technical details and runs the gamut of fascinating information. I have learned a great deal from this book. I'm sure I will have to read it again to fully grasp the contents. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in volcanoes.

A good read if you're into geology. Well researched on the long term effects, both local and global, of eruptions recent and long past. If you wonder what might happen after "the big one", this book tells you "what happened last time"

Keto Air Fryer Cookbook is awesome! I'm very pleased with this cookbook- I've tried three recipes so far (orange chicken, carnitas, and almond rice pilaf) and all have turned out excellent. The directions are well written and easy to follow. I'd like it if there were more pictures, but I still enjoy perusing the book and reading the recipes. The main reason I bought this book, rather than some of the other Keto Air Fryer Cookbook cookbooks available, is that this cookbook has recipes for more "ordinary" food. I've noticed a trend with Instant Pot recipes is for exotic dishes with specialty ingredients and unusual flavor combinations. This cookbook does have some trendy recipes but the majority of them are everyday classics. Lovely book! Nice one! I like it.

I downloaded the Kindle version of this book as soon as I'd opened my new air fryer. The manual that came with the fryer included no recipes whatsoever. I chose this book because it includes lots of handy charts that cover the basics (like how long to cook various vegetables based on size and whether they're fresh or frozen) as well as actual recipes for all kinds of dishes from appetizers to desserts. So happy I got this book! I refer to it every time I use my air fryer. air fryer cookbook, air fryer recipes.

Great product for the price, really nice simple recipes for the every day family and two person house hold. I love the fact that most of the recipes are what all of us cook on a every day basis. This will not be sitting in a cupboard with 50 other cook books. This will be used every day. If you want a air fryer cook book with chicken and pork chops and different potatoes along with stuff you have in your home then this is the one. No fancy dishes just good home cooking.

Yummy! This book is amazing! The dishes are easy to prepare and are authentic and delicious. I was able to have butter chicken and black eye peas and spinach, in the pot, in almost half an hour. I bought the seven recommended spices and, aside from the meat and fresh produce, I can make almost every dish in the book. The recipes are easy to follow and have low carb options. A lot of variety. What is also nice is that it not only provides great recipes, it has stories! Personal stories from the author, history for the dish, as well as the different cultures like India. It will allow you to cook yogurt meals, in less time. Highly recommend. I love it!

Nice one! I am new to air frying. Love this cookbook, it not only has healthy great tasting recipes it educates you. Easy to follow instructions and great tips. Has pictures of each dish, which I also love. Editing is supreme. Another big plus for me is she dos not use salt (very little if any) whch is important for me since my goal us to lower sodium and fat in my diet. I am so impressed yesterday that decided to order another one in paperback! Thank you for this great book! I love it!

Good! This book was charming and stacked with information about Keto Air Fryer. I acknowledge to examine this book. I will propose this book all my partner. I purchased Keto Air Fryer, Kindle version this morning and began reading right away with my morning coffee. 2.5 hours later I just finished it and have so much motivation for meals and this lifestyle. Can’t wait to continue this journey! Author is such an inspiration and so refreshing to have a book that explains keto in simple terms and recipes that are easily done! Nice!

Well! I can't remember a recent kitchen appliance trend more popular than the Instant Pot. But as far as practical kitchen items that real people purchase, Instant Pot is high on the list (w/the Air Fryer quickly on its tail - I'm sure I'll be reviewing that cookbook soon). Keto Air Fryer Cookbook arrived on my doorstep for free via a promotional giveaway. It covers everything from the parts, process, preferred ingredients, tools, and actual recipes for every category of meal. It also contains a useful description for converting regular recipes to instant pot recipes. On to the recipes...breakfast covers yummy recipes from lemon-poppy seed breakfast cake to Florentine omelet. I was pleasantly surprised to find the recipe for a honey-turmeric tonic the day I first picked up the book. My head cold had been killing meand this find was enough to keep me going. In addition to breakfast, there are sections on beans & gravy, soups & chilis, poultry, beef & pork, veggies & sides, dessert, and pantry. It is this last section that changed my mind from a 4 to a 5 star review. Having a soffrito, quick mayonnaise, or apple sauce ready at hand is a great way to take a semi-homemade meal to a fully homemade one.In terms of quality of publication, the thick hard cover and heavy matte pages are perfect for a book in a well-used kitchen. While you could likely find many of the recipes or similar online. The utility of this one stop shop would be perfect as a holiday gift for the budding Instant Pot cook. Awesome i love it!

I had never prepped or planned an entire menu for the week. This cookbook was a great help! Shows just about everything you need to get into it! Love it! Only wish it gave the sugar grams per recipe but I've been figuring those on my own! The recipes are fully explained and so far I've liked most of the things I've made. I'm following the weight loss prep plan. Yum! Great!!!
