Review

"The strength of this collection is in its diversity-of gender, sexuality, privilege, experience, and writing style. A gift for anyone who understands or wants to learn about the breadth of experience among immigrants to the U.S., this collection showcases the joy, empathy, and fierceness needed to adopt the country as one's own."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"Immigration has become a hot-button issue in America for all the wrong reasons (see: racists), and The Good Immigrant is the perfect antidote to all the hate. Through essays from first- and second-generation immigrants like Jenny Zhang, Chigozie Obioma, Fatimah Asghar, and more, you'll get a whole new perspective on everything from '90s fashion to Uber drivers."―PopSugar"Immigrants offer affecting personal essays about adapting to daily life in the United States while also retaining their identities forged by foreign cultures...There are no weak links in this well-curated book."―Kirkus Reviews"A timely and important read, filled with gorgeous writing."―Woman's DayPraise for The Good Immigrant (UK):"The Good Immigrant is a lively and vital intervention into the British cultural conversation around race. Instead of statistics and dogma we find real human experience and impassioned argument - and it's funny and moving, too." ―Zadie Smith"An important, timely read."―J. K. Rowling"To say the publication of The Good Immigrant has come at a good time would be an understatement ... If 2016 has left you feeling helpless, desperately wondering what you can do to repair the damage of anti-immigration rhetoric, then reading it would be a good place to start: it leaves you feeling armed with empathy."―Vice

Book Review: The Good Immigrant: 26 Writers Reflect on AmericaEdited by: Nikesh Shukla and Chimene SuleymanPublisher: Little, Brown and CompanyPublication Date: February 19, 2019Review Date: February 14, 2014I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest reviewFrom the Amazon blurb:“An urgent collection of essays by first and second-generation immigrants, exploring what it's like to be othered in an increasingly divided America.”This is a remarkable nonfiction collection of 26 writers, speaking about their experiences of what it has meant for them to have lived in the US, not being a native-born citizen. Of not having from infancy that complete knowing, I am an American. I was born here. My parents and grandparents were born here, and everything in my experience says, “I belong here.”Some of of the writers were born in the US, but their parents immigrated here for various reasons, and perhaps their parents never learned to speak English. Or the language of origin is onlyspoken at home, even if the writer grew up speaking English at school. Culturally their home life is of their original country. They grew up feeling ‘othered’ by their accent, the smell of the food they brought from home, by the clothing their parents insisted they wear, by their parents’ worldview.Basically, they never felt like they belonged here. And often, when visiting their parent country of origin, they felt they as outsiders there. Somewhere in between, not belonging anywhere. They have never had that experience of Home, which has led to great inner turmoil and longing. The writing of each of the 26 was superb.Clear and full of their longing for Home. No matter where on the globe they came from, this experience of ‘otherness’ is the same.I grew up in the Midwest in the early 1950’s in a homogenous community. I never had the experience of not feeling that this is Home. I imagine most of us have had that deeper yearning for Home, but that is more a spiritual issue. What is being discussed here is to what degree someone feels them self to be American. All my reference points are as an American. So it was very eye opening to see what others have experienced.I highly recommend this book. 5 Stars! If you like reading essays, and about what people go through whose families’ have been immigrants, I believe you will enjoy this book.Thank you to Little, Brown and Company for allowing me an early look at this outstanding collection of essays. This review will be posted on NetGalley, Goodreads and Amazon.#netgalley #thegoodimmigrant #littlebrownandcompany

The publisher’s review uses terms such as first and second generation immigrant. There is no such thing as a second generation immigrant. A child of an immigrant is a first generation American. They have not migrated, they were born in the country where their patents migrated to therefore they are a first generation America (Brit, German, Etc).

The US Edition of The Good Immigrant is nothing short of captivating. Each story is unique and has a different take to the Immigrant experience in the US. Would recommend to everyone I know to gain new perspectives.

Very helpful. We've been living overseas for years and should have read earlier versions of this book. We knew some of this information, but definitely learned some things. For example, we long ago met the residency test for the FEIE, but have been using the physical presence test and stressing about the 330 day requirement. A quick read and worth the price.

Som of the information I knew or was familiar with like the earned income exclusion but how to manage other tax issues with a Panamanian or similar corporation were delightful bits of new knowledge for me. To be informed is to be protected.

This is very useful information if you are an American expat! This guide helps you walk through all of the steps to stay in compliance with the IRS. I highly recommend this guide!

If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

Amazon.com Review

Welcome to the hilariously hypothetical world of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. Everything has an impact on everything else in this world, so if you take a mouse to the movies, don't be surprised if you find yourself being run ragged by the exuberant little fellow's increasingly grand appetites. When we first met him in Numeroff and Bond's tremendously popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, he had more energy than a 2-year-old on lollipops. Now, in the excitement of the Christmas season, he's unstoppable. Going from movie theater to Christmas tree lot to the neighbor's yard for snowmouse-building, he's a very demanding mouse indeed--in only the best way, of course. The freshness of the If You Give a... series is diminished only slightly as the sequels pile up. The dazed and earnest look on the face of the mouse's long-suffering friend makes a marvelous foil for the mouse's high-spirited expressions. Adult readers will chuckle as they recognize the ephemeral passions of a child, while children will simply love the unfolding chain of events. A perfect Christmas read-aloud for the impetuous youngster on your list. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Following the popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (1987), If You Give a Moose a Muffin (1991), and If You Give a Pig a Pancake (1998), Numeroff offers another lively cause-and-effect romp. When a boy takes a mouse to the movies, the mouse wants popcorn, which he strings together and wants to hang on the Christmas tree that the boy buys for him. On the way home, the mouse wants to play in the snow but then needs to warm up at home, where he sings Christmas carols and wants to decorate the tree. His popcorn string is missing, so he wants to make another, which reminds him of the movies . . . As with the previous titles, children will find both the bouncy speculative text and the colorful illustrations irresistible. In simple pictures filled with wit, Bond personalizes both the story and the characters, creating the earnest boy, eager to please his gleeful, hyper mouse. A charmer that's sure to get plenty of circulation. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

#44,266 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

We have so many of the books in this series, and my children love them. This book feels so random though. The cat goes from place to place and the book has no flow to it. I mean, they rarely were in one place longer than one page. This is the first one from the author I've been disappointed with.

There is a whole series of "If you give a" books. They are all cleverly written and funny. My 2 year old daughter loves them and laughs hysterically when I read them. I enjoy reading them too. The pages are vibrant and the illustrations are beautiful. The pages are also durable and thick which I appreciate as a mom of a tot.Overall, this is a beautiful, fun, and durable book that was well written. I recommend it. Check out "If you give a pig a pancake". (same author) That's our favorite book!

Cute story and my 2 year old wanted to read it a lot. However this version has a lot of useless extra things- really horrible songs that don’t fit the correct tune, weird extra sketches, and recipes I’m never going to try. Should have paid more attention when buying, happy with the cute story and illustrations but wish I got the normal addition without all the nonsense- would have been cheaper and saved me some headaches when trying to figure out how the song lyrics could possibly fit the tune. That being said my toddler thought it was hilarious because it was making me frustrated, so maybe that’s what they were going for? Authors should stick to writing stories!!!

My 2 1/2 year old son's previous all time favorite book was "The Best Mouse Cookie" and has been for the last 1 1/2 years. This might replace it-- at least for several months. He and I both love all the seasonal tie ins to winter, snow, Christmas, snowmen, etc. We love the mouse, his constant need to be doing something different...and the boy who sweetly goes along with everything he asks. This will be one that we won't put away with the other Christmas books-- we will keep it out year round! We had to buy it via Amazon as we saw this book at Barnes & Noble but Amazon's price was 25% better or so (and no tax) so we waited for it to come in the mail instead. Happy with this purchase and this series in general!

I never mind a used book. Books should be read by many eyes. Now, if you’re selling used books, be truthful with your audience. I was looking for this book to add to my sons library. These books are his favorite. I bought this thinking it was a used hard cover book, like it said, but was misinformed. It’s a mini book from a chick fil a kids meal. I just spend 10$ on a free toy from chic fil a..... it’s funny....but not really lol I’m just going to Barnes and noble for this book. I’m returning this toy.

Makes it that much better when my own cat is a tuxedo...This was for a birthday gift along with an Amazon gift card (Yup! A 6 year-old asking for gifts cards already). LolAs a cute added bonus, I bought a stuffed tuxedo cat to tie onto the book as a hug-a-long with the story and chose the Amazon gift card that came in a gift tin shaped like a cupcake.I'm a sticker for the details...

Having read the reviews by others who thought this book didn't flow well, I tend to agree. The flow of events isn't as seamless as in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. But, it's still a great read, and my toddler loves it. She's a cat lover and I bought this book on this fact alone. Yes, there are some things that don't make a ton of sense in this book...but really, do many kid's books make perfect sense? She loves it and that's good enough for me. If you only have the money to get one or two If You Give Books, I'd get the others I listed above before getting this one. I think they are better stories. But, I'm not sorry I bought this one and my toddler sure loves it and that's all that matters to me.

This book is hilarious. My daughter loves it. The crazy scenarios that might happen when you give a cat a cupcake. The possibilities are absurd and we as adults know that but my daughter think they could be real. Given the fact she is five years old only but now she wants a cat herself. The illustrations are so cute and the storyline.
