This book has a lot of inspiring ideas and instructions for aspects of fairy homes. It's very tastefully done, not "cutesy". I do wish there were instructions for building a stone house though.

I have been collecting "bits & pieces" of materials to build some Fairy Houses, but I wasn't feeling inspired to attempt putting them together until I found this book and the two calendars that are also available with photos of these wonderfully artistic little houses! Every time that I look at them it makes my heart beat faster. I am a craftsman and I am not interested in following someone else's instructions but I find it so helpful to see new methods, new ideas and just totally inspiring photographs to spur my own imagination. But, I so love the little castle that is pictured on the cover that I think I will have to make one very similar just to have it in my possession. I love this book and would love it even if I didn't want to make any houses!

The most inspiring and wonderful book you could ever see ! My copy came yesterday and I have already been outside searching for things to create my own fairy dwelling. I am 67 years young and have loved the fairies all my life. What fun to see all of the ideas and natural objects that can go into a little house. The hardest part will be deciding what to make first. Thank you, Sally, for sharing your magical vision with the rest of us !

I love this book, so many creative ideas to look at. There is not many step by step instructions, but the author addresses that in the beginning. I wish I could find someone doing Fairy home building workshops in my area. I know once I get started my creative juices will flow.

Even if I never actually build a fairy house, I love looking at the pictures and admiring her handiwork and cleverness. She is very kind to nature and implores you to ask before taking - even the plants themselves. I hope one day my daughter and I can use some of her lessons and build little houses as we take hikes. Definitely glad to add this book to my collection.

It's not often we get to see such talent played out in such a whimsical way. I make faerie houses myself, yet so appreciate seeing Sally's artistry in this book. I love that she's willing to share her secrets too. Great eye candy!

We're long time fairy house builders and big fans of Sally J. Smith's so naturally this book had to come live at our house. It's full of nice ideas and directions on making some of the trickier things (windows for example) that appear in the author's lovely creations. I only wish some of the images were larger so the details could really be seen!

This is a beautifully illustrated book. For using natural materials this is your book. I only wish there were more types of construction discussed. If you are going to create houses using upcycled materials, this isn't covered in this book. It is a wonderful book for getting your creativity going.

Review

"If there's only one book that a student can get on NT background, then this has to be it. Its breadth and depth is unmatched by anything that I've had access to in my studies."--Nick Norelli, Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth (rdtwot.wordpress.com), June 16, 2008"An excellent resource for students who are eager to continue their research into the cultural contexts of the New Testament. Although it is a bit beyond most beginners, that is an advantage to those who need an intermediate level vehicle."--David W. Chapman, Presbyterion: Covenant Seminary Review 32, no. 2

This volume is in the huge series from IVP on all areas of the bible. This book is a must have for any series pastor or student of the NT. I have used this several times in my study for sermons, papers, or just general questions I have had regarding background issues and the NT. I gave it 4/5 stars due to the need for a second edition. The editors at IVP have already processed the printing of a 2nd edition of Jesus and the Gospels, and I think it's time for a second edition of this volume as well. That being said, you cannot down play the significance of this volume and the series.

WHile this is a recent purchase, I have looked up several topics and have been very satisfied at the scholarship and thoroughness. For example, there were 7 pages of explanation on Messianic ideas and their development in the time of our Lord. Any Bible teacher of the Gospels would especially benefit in preparations by gaining valuable background information.

Tremendous amount of information. Very thorough.

I have purchased most of these books for my husband and they are all very good and helpful.I cannot elaborate on content, but he is a religion major and all of these have been super helpful and chalk full of information.

This book is informative and a must have as it helps to explain some of the traditions and perhaps what the author may have been trying to convey. The book is set up by chapter and verse!

great addition to my library

Amazon.com Review

This analysis of what makes great companies great has been hailed everywhere as an instant classic and one of the best business titles since In Search of Excellence. The authors, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras, spent six years in research, and they freely admit that their own preconceptions about business success were devastated by their actual findings--along with the preconceptions of virtually everyone else. Built to Last identifies 18 "visionary" companies and sets out to determine what's special about them. To get on the list, a company had to be world famous, have a stellar brand image, and be at least 50 years old. We're talking about companies that even a layperson knows to be, well, different: the Disneys, the Wal-Marts, the Mercks. Whatever the key to the success of these companies, the key to the success of this book is that the authors don't waste time comparing them to business failures. Instead, they use a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies to highlight what's special about their 18 "visionary" picks. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, Hewlett Packard to Texas Instruments, and so on. The core myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies must start with a great product and be pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. There are examples of that pattern, they admit: Johnson & Johnson, for one. But there are also just too many counterexamples--in fact, the majority of the "visionary" companies, including giants like 3M, Sony, and TI, don't fit the model. They were characterized by total lack of an initial business plan or key idea and by remarkably self-effacing leaders. Collins and Porras are much more impressed with something else they shared: an almost cult-like devotion to a "core ideology" or identity, and active indoctrination of employees into "ideologically commitment" to the company. The comparison with the business "B"-team does tend to raise a significant methodological problem: which companies are to be counted as "visionary" in the first place? There's an air of circularity here, as if you achieve "visionary" status by ... achieving visionary status. So many roads lead to Rome that the book is less practical than it might appear. But that's exactly the point of an eloquent chapter on 3M. This wildly successful company had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were both keen to see the company succeed and unafraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works." --Richard Farr

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.Summarizing the basic themes:* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignmentUnlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

[book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

for anyone wanting to know what it takes to be a successful company, read this!"Managers at visionary companies simply do not accept the proposition that they must choose between short-term performance or long-term success. They build first and foremost for the long term while simultaneously holding themselves to highly demanding short-term standards". p182 - one of my my favorite quotes in this book.

Bought this book used after hearing a motivational speaker reference this book. The seller shipped this in record time and the book itself is a great read. This book is not just for people in the business world, but can be applicable to anyone in any field who is looking for lasting success within its organization. Highly recommend this book to anyone!

I honestly think there are better books out there for this subject matter. This book is seemingly a quick read. The tone of voice is as if you’re having a chat with a friend about the topic over a beer. There’s studies and other supporting information behind all of the claims, but it would have been better organized (I think) as a TED talk or research study.

Thoroughly researched and filled with great points. Knocked it one star because, after the first few chapters, it becomes incredibly redundant and it really drags. I could only read about Ford and 3M's same success stories so many times before I became saturated with it and couldn't take another dose. For the last few chapters, I read the first few pages and then went back to the chapter's "Take Away" section and still got everything I wanted out of the book. If an abridged version comes out, look into getting that one instead.

If you have the good to great I feel all info are just copy paste. But was enjoying to read it.

Bought this to share with an intern working for me. Jim Collins has boiled down those criteria and focus areas which real leaders need to dedicate their hours to for long term success. No silly "How to Make Friends..." and other half-baked advice. Jim Collins does research and finds what actually works. My 30+ years in management and leadership matches perfectly. Strongly recommend for students, early professionals interested in long-term success, and the mid-level manager who feels they may not have been mentored in a quality environment.

This was a decent intro to Islamic history from a Western historian's point of view. Most books about Islam that are written by Western scholars tend to be overly critical (in my opinion). Generally I prefer to read an anthropologist's take on Islamic issues if I'm to read a piece written from a non-Muslim, simply because they are less biased. I took a chance with this one, and found it to still be pretty good.

Silverstein's monograph is a fairly quick read, and well worth the effort. The history is rather sparse, as the title implies, but it makes a nice companion to something more detailed like Berkey's "The Formation of Islam." Well-written throughout, value comes particularly in the analysis and insight developed in the later chapters and conclusion, though some may find it "controversial." Highly recommended.

The Book is so easy to understand and provides a wonderful gateway into the importance and history of Islamic religion and society. By giving historical background, the author clarifies the reasons and meanings behind 20th and 21st century events. There are many maps, photos, and short excerpts included in the book so readers can easily understand what the author is explaining.

Appreciated what I learned, the quality of the writing, the nature of the analysis. Realize that it is a "short introduction" but felt that I got a very good overview. Excellent read. Thank you.

This book is valuable not only for a historical overview of Islamic tradition, but for the insightful last chapter on current Islam and world perception of it. This book is respectful of the religion while being forthright about some of the less pretty parts of its history. The style of the book is very accessible... some scholars may say it is too broad and not deep enough, but it met my needs... I may want to read a multi-volume work in Islam in the future, but not this weekend.

Silverstein, an Oxford professor, writes with the clarity and simplicity that I would love to emulate. His exquisite style makes reading this complex history much easier than it might be in less capable hands. As for the accuracy of his historical account, I have no basis for judgment. Nevertheless, I would recommend this slight volume to anyone seeking a brief introduction to Islam. A good counterweight and a book I highly recommend is Timothy Gianotti's "In the Light of a Blessed Tree: Illuminations of Islamic Belief, Practice, and History," another wonderfully clear and incisive brief study of Islam, written by a former Catholic, now a Muslim. Gianotti's book includes autobiographical information describing how he came to Islam.

Most people are surprised that I am reading a book on Islam written by a westerner, that too, being a Muslim myself. But this is a very honest summary of the cultural and historical impact and importance of Islam. Its a very honest assessment and it got me hooked on Islamic history so much that I couldnt stop browsing the net for two weeks, scouring for more info. Very informative and provides several arguments and counter arguments, so that you can decide for yourself.

It's sometimes a difficult slog, but that's because the history of Islam is long and very convoluted. It's necessary reading for those who wish to have a deeper understanding of Islam. He proves points throughout the book then sums them up at the end. Clear and as concise as can be to do justice to a history most westerners have almost no knowledge of.

This kindlebook of Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?: And Other Questions You Should Have Answers to When You Work in the White House by Alyssa Mastromonaco is a memoir of someone who documents her time in the White House with in both a candid manner and inspirational pride. The beginning of the kindlebook explains how she came to work for former President Obama. She had found out about the opportunity from someone who had previously worked with her on John Kerry’s 2004 Presidential campaign.Mastromonaco is truthful about her feelings when concern initially seemed to be raised about her working on Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign due to her not originally being from Illinois. Mastromonaco’s account of her experience with Queen Elizabeth’s 60th jubilee celebration makes for a fascinating read. I also enjoyed how she admitted to sensing surprise from other people of how she came so far professionally in spite of coming from a very humble background (different from what many people would consider a prestigious background).

Ms. Mastromonaco, the Obama White House deputy most likely to regale the staff with “The Jackal,” has written a political memoir – slash – thriller. Will she even survive her absolutely draining stint as PBO’s aide-de-camp? I worried that the last page would just be whatever letters were in the center of her keyboard when her poor forehead came crashing down.Which is merely to say that Ms. Mastromonaco does an excellent job of telling civilians about the stress and adrenaline levels of working in the White House. (At least back when people were keen to do a good job for the citizens of America.) From getting POTUS and entourage a second plane in case of an Iraqi sandstorm, or making sure the U.S. Secret agents were allowed to bring their weapons into South Africa, Ms. Mastromonaco got the job done. One might, simply out of feminist reflex, flinch each time the author mentions that she cried. The underlying culprits were usually exhaustion or physical issues. However, when one considers the grim souls currently stalking the west wing, one remembers to appreciate the fact that she has a human, beating heart, and that she had the emotional capacity to actually care.I suspect privacy rules & regs forced the author to limit the PBO anecdotes. The former president’s playful attempts at matchmaking for Ms. Mastromonaco caught me by surprise; the ultra-rational regimen of salmon and brown rice (even while campaigning) did not. But he seems to have been just like all non-disturbed people saw him to be – an extraordinarily decent, bright, hardworking man. A man who, while carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, took time to call a grieving Ms. Mastromonaco and offer her words of comfort from Air Force One. Just as, I believe history will confirm, the nation was lucky to have him, Obama was lucky to have Ms. Mastromonaco.

Mastromomaco says towards the end of this book that she intended it for 15-25 year olds. That revelation explained a lot and made me a bit more forgiving of her over sharing of menstrual and IBS symptoms. I understand that she is trying to make her big, intimidating career relatable to young adults, but at times she goes a bit too far and ends up demeaning her position. She must be a whip smart, incredibly fast learner with a work ethic second to none, yet we hear lots about her potty problems, her cat, her clothes. Bottom line was I enjoyed the book, and the Very little insight she gives into Obama is still fascinating. I just wish I had read it as a college kid.

As a 50- something year old man, I am not Alyssa's target audience. Still, I found this book refreshingly personable and peppered with terrific glimpses of the humanity that made the Obama Administration so compelling. I am recommending this book to my 21- year - old daughter (who shares my interest in politics) as a lesson that even the most accomplished people in the world deal with personal struggles behind the scenes. Thanks, Alyssa.

It’s a very good read. She’s very funny and it’s interesting to learn about all the tasks that one White House staffer must do behind-the-scenes to make various events come off smoothly.I’m struck by how real and cool Obama is. Alyssa had a very stressful job that required frantically working on numerous tasks. When Obama was a senator, Alyssa's desk was near the back door to Obama’s office. Once when she was on the floor doing sit ups to relieve the stress, Obama walked by. She was concerned he might be upset, but instead he said, “Good for you.”Class guy! Thanks Alyssa for letting us see another side of a president we respected and admired.

I have always been a great admirer of Barack Obama, so it was only natural that I would read this book which promises a peak into everyday life in the White House. It is more about Alyssa Mastromonaco and her role as chief of staff, but it was delightful and informative and showed once again the human empathic leader that Barack Obama is. Ps: I'm not American, so he was not my President, therefore, politics aside, I still think he is a great orator and writer and of course a thinker and great family man.

First: I despise politicians and am a fiercely independent voter. I have no idea how it got on my Kindle because memoirs are not my thing - particularly political ones. However, I found this book delightful. It is so refreshing to see POTUS as a real live human. It was awesome to know that Obama learned how to deal with Sandy by directly asking Bush's people about what went wrong with Katrina. I found it inspiring that the two past presidents helped each other out for the betterment of the country (I sincerely doubt the current POTUS bothers to ask his predecessors anything🙄).The advice given here is useful for anyone, of any age, that wants forward momentum in their career. Plus, it's just a great read. It should be required reading for college kids. It has super practical advice and real life examples.I loved the glimpse behind the curtain of life in the White House. I totally understand why the burnout rate is so high. I know for sure I couldn't keep the pace. Fantastic read.

This is a must have along with the book below to really understand how to deal with color with all it's implications and meaning. A well balance to color within a creation is tantamount to it's success. This book is a great book to understand and enter into the market. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner.I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand. BUT!!!!! There is hope!!!if you want to know about Color theory to get even better....COLOR WORKS, the crafter Guide to Color by Deb MenzFOR ANYONE who wants to know about Color Theory this test breaks it down so that ANYONE can understand this subject. I learned more about color theory in this book than all others put together because I now "Understand" the concept. While this book is for the textile artist, ALL artists should get it and is also has cut outs to use when choosing your colour palette whether it be for Fashion Design or Art.This book is a MUST HAVE!!!!

This is a review for the hardcover version of the paperback. I'm reviewing it now because I just took it off my shelf to get design ideas for a scarf and was reminded of how good a book it is (the only book I've ever bought a second copy of to leave in our vacation home). It's a shame the book's title is what it is, because it doesn't convey the wealth of information it contains far beyond color knitting. Yes, it begins with an excellent chapter on color theory, using pictures of the color wheel to provide practical tips on choosing color combinations, and has chapters covering any number of beautifully pictured two and multi colored stitches. It also contains a number of projects making use of the techniques covered, and has a very useful chapter on what to do with all those variegated skeins that are hard to know how to put to best use, showing how different variegations look when used with different stitches and patters. However, what sets this book apart is the quality of the color pictures and explicit directions covering a myriad of techniques used in creating them. It covers any number of basic and more advanced techniques by no means confined to multiple colors, as well as being a wealth of information on finishing techniques and embellishments. It also covers knitting on double pointed needles, addressing problems people commonly encounter; double knitting; entrelac; knitting in the round, and steeking, to name just a few. It even covers sweater architecture, with useful diagrams of flat, circular and sideway knitted designs. Beginner+ to intermediate knitters could appreciably advance their skills making use of this book alone Truly one of the best knitting books I've encountered.

The Essential Guide to Color Techniques (TEGCT) is a gorgeous, 319 glossy-page, hardcover book that is written by Margaret Radcliffe. This HK teacher stresses creativity in knitting and arranges her classes from easy to complex, so that all learners can progress through systemically-planned lessons – like those that she presents in this book.TEGCT was written in 2008 and published by Stoney Publishing in MA.On almost every page of the book Chapters before the Appendices, she includes stunning color photos of yarn, knitting, and related paraphernalia, which she uses to demonstrate: color basics; how to create HK stitches; projects; both left-/ and right-hand knitting techniques; correcting mistakes; modifying existing patterns; demystifying steeks; and finishing techniques, among a multitude of other topics. This heavy book also comes in dust jacket, and the book has the following, important 9 chapters: Chapter 1. Color Basics; Chapter 2. Stripes; Chapter 3. Pattern Stitches; Chapter 4. Multicolor Yarns; Chapter 5. Stranded Knitting; Chapter 6.Intarsia; Chapter 7. Other Techniques; Chapter 8. Finishing Touches; and Chapter 9. Design Workshop.4 Appendices (which contain simple 2-color stitch graphics) follow these Chapters:A. Glossary of TechniquesB. Using ChartsC. Garment Sizing GuidelinesD. Abbreviations and SymbolsFinally come the last sections of the book: The Bibliography (including Elizabeth Zimmermann’s books, The Vogue Ultimate Knitting Book, Alice Starmore’s books, and Sally Melville’s books, just to name a few); Acknowledgement; and Index.TEGCT is a book that often sits on my coffee table right next to my Elizabeth Zimmerman (EZ), Alice Starmore, and Sally Melville books; My Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book; and my knitting machine books like those from Susan Guagliumi. I pull these books to page-through, to then become inspired to begin a new knitting project. (See my reviews of these books.)This is a great book in my knitting library, and it should be in yours, too.

First about me: I have been knitting only three months. Prior to this book I knit 2 hats, 2 dish cloths, 1 chenille face cloth, and two tiny snowmen. What I want to knit are color work, socks, mittens, and maybe a Norwegian sweater. I bought this book with those goals in mind. (If you are going to dream, dream BIG.)This book is clear, concise, well organized. It has projects that tackle and walk you through specific types of colorwork (Fair Isle, Stranded.) The projects are building blocks of techniques. The book opens with a highly detailed look at color and how color is combined for pleasing effect. This section is worth the cost of the book by itself. Each type of color knitting has very in-depth examinations along with helpful problem solving (important to new knitters like myself.)This book gave me the confidence to start a traditional South American Chullo (8 colors,) and it is going well!!!!I can't recommend this book more highly!
