With her husband, Roger Grounds, she is former co-owner of Apple Court, a British nursery specializing in hostas, daylilies, and grasses. This pocket guide's small enough to tuck into the car for that weekend hosta hunt! Or park it next to your favorite chair with a cup of tea. If you're like me you'll be needing blank paper & pen too for that list of "must have" hostas.Happy hosta hunting!

I moved into a new house and knew i wanted to use hostas in my shady areas. I bought this book after checking it out at the library. It has soooo many color photos and great descriptions. I used it to choose about a dozen different hostas to buy. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about hostas and is a visual person like me.

This book is well organized and concise. It features more than 800 hostas with 302 photographs. Included are many new cultivars. It can easily be taken with you when visiting nurseries. This is an excellent book for the new gardner as well as the experienced collector. Among the information given is a glossary of terms and an easy index. Regarding individual hostas, it gives an approximate size and habit, a complete plant description, as well as comments regarding light requirements and location for optimal garden usage. This book has become a constant companion.

Thank goodness there is a book with so many pictures for a source of reference for Hosta plants! Once you start collecting Hosta, you will find them to be addicting. I sometimes forget the name of a Hosta when the label is lost and this book helps to identify the plant agiain. These plants are so much fun with so many names. Thank you Diana Grenfell and Mike Shadrack for putting this book together

I have to finally admit to a failure. Timber Press caught my eye, Pocket Guide was the seller, but for myself interested in species Hosta, this book was a serious let down. Little to no information concerning species, their cultivars or hybrids. Good for the Novice gardener, but advanced gardeners should move on.

I continue to like hostas more and more. They are so 'durable', easy to grow, provide eye-candy and dress up landscaping. I have more to learn, though, so this will help a lot. I bought it on the strength of positive feedback from other buyers.

This is a wonderful little book. Excellent photos, and qutie comprehensive. However, it is not intended to be a treatise or all-inclusive book, so of course it doesn't have every last detail about every hosta every registered. It's portability is espcially appreciated, as it can easily be taken along on hosta hunting expeditions. Highly recommended.

Another book that will go to my grave with me. It is so wonderful to leaf through in the cold, gray winter months. I was a hostaholic before I got this book and it just keeps me addicted and happy.

About the Author

Stan Kittleson is an accomplished racquetball player and has been teaching racquetball since 1972. He has been a physical educator in college settings since 1968. He earned his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1973. Dr. Kittleson has served as president of the Illinois Association for Professional Preparation in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). He is currently a professor of physical education at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. When not teaching or playing racquetball, Dr. Kittleson enjoys scuba diving, alpine skiing, and golf.

This book offers a good deal of useful information to the beginner and intermediate racquetball player. Even if you have played racquetball for some time, this book should still offer you some practical advise and strategies to improve your skills. The book is logically organized around 18 "steps to success," and there are instructions for specific drills to be carried out individually or with a partner to master each step. A number of figures complement the explanations throughout the book, though I wish the author had also included some real-life pictures to better illustrate some of the techniques. I have played racquetball intermittently for many years without much formal instruction, and this book, indeed, improved my game. All and all, this is a good source to read and refer to if you wish to develop as a racquetball player.

This book was definitely designed for a beginner to low intermediate player that has not had any organized racquetball training. The six rules to a better game really have helped me, by teaching me winning strategy. The six rules are also not to overwhelming to stay focused on the techniques during my games.Nice workbook format with very good diagrams and practice drills to actually get you on the court practicing. The practice drills focus on building each individual skill allowing the end result to come to you naturally over time and practice (sorry the perfection of the skill does take time and practice- otherwise we'd all be incredible wouldn't we)?I also liked that fact that the author did not bore me with the history of the game, the racquet, or many other frivolous items (there are a few, but they are quick). He gets down to the business of how to simply play better racquetball.I cheated and skipped around from chapter to chapter getting the most bang for my buck in the shortest time. If something in a chapter needed some supporting info or skill I was referred back to the other chapter. However, I read the entire book and did find some great info on areas that I was more familiar with before I started the book.If you are an advanced player look elsewhere for improving an intermediate or better game. If you are starting out or never learned racquetball strategy you can't go wrong with this book.

This book has been a great source of information and has helped to improve my game. The author does a good job of identifying the different aspects of the game and describes each well. The various shot drills and court diagrams are also a great learning tool. Anyone who wants to improve their racquetball and follows this manual can't help but get better.

This is a worthy book to have around. It includes many drills to help you home in, especially useful are the "what youre doing wrong" sections.
