Wild Steps to Heaven was a real disappointment. I read Rain of Gold and Thirteen Senses and enjoyed the stories about the family and their hardships in making a life for themselves in a different society. The characters were well drawn. I couldn't help fall in love with every single one of them.Wild Steps to Heaven goes back to the time when little Lupe wasn't born yet. Much was a rehash what already had been told in the other two books. But what really disappointed me was the poor characterization of the Villasenor children. It was very superficial. The dialogue was not persistent with the way of life in this poor mountainous area. I didn't even feel the desire to finish the book.

Amazon has never disappointed me -- I bought my Kindle only about 2 months ago and haven't gotten a good night's sleep since... I already had a sleep disorder and a reading addiction, and now, I'm not only reading but BROWSING all night! Wild Steps of Heaven was as wonderful as all the rest of Victor Villasenor's books and now I think I've read everything of his except "The Snow Goose..." and the screenplay "Ballad of Gregorio Cortez." Can't locate them yet. I'm working on a memoir and will probably try to self-publish it via Kindle. Thanks for a terrific service! The Kindle is truly revolutionary, and when I move to Ecuador I am sure it will save my sanity... Victor's books have already given me a lot of energy.

I was a bit disappointed that none of the pictures are new and are all duplicates from their other books. I also find this format size more challenging to do. All in all it is still a great item and their competitors sticker books will leave you disappointed.

I just love this "sticker by number" calendar. I can put it aside when needed. I plan on buying other " sticker by number" books in the near future.

I love these books! I spend a lot of time in the hospital with cancer, and these are so portable and relaxing.

Overall, this is a fun, quick activity that I've started looking forward to each month. My only complaint is that some of the stickers don't pull off the sheet completely and nearly all of them seem just a little bit too small to properly cover the space.

For this to be interesting to some older people with poor eyesight, the sticker codes need to be larger.We have one elderly friend who cannot or will not read the numbers on these calendar art worksand another who delights in coloring the geometric designs in the coloring books for old people.

I first got the Paint by Sticker book and was totally hooked immediately. Really fun, and great stress relief! My mother saw it and wanted one for herself, so I got her this, then immediately bought myself one.Beware that some of the stickers are *really* tiny, so be prepared to possibly use tweezers and occasionally a magnifying glass.

Bought this for a very low price as it is a 2018 wall calendar purchased in April. First two pages of the calendar were bent back while it was shrink wrapped. I enjoy the sticker books a LOT but did not know the calendar is made up of images that are already in the other books.

Gifted it to my little sister who loves art and puzzles. She couldn't be more excited, and sends me pictures each month of the completed page. Get it!

By way of full disclosure, I am a plastic surgeon with an interest in patients troubled by disturbed body image and an addiction to cosmetic surgery. When I first wrote about that topic in my 2009 surgery textbook, I made the case from a few of my own patient studies that childhood trauma was one of the causes of an obsession for plastic surgery and postoperative dissatisfaction, but it was Dr. Scaer's work and that of others in the trauma field (Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Pia Mellody, Pat Ogden, Bernice Andrews, and others) that has subsequently helped me piece together a stronger theory and then provide evidence for it, some of which will be published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in October. Dr. Scaer and I have subsequently traded a few emails and he has encouraged my further researchDr. Scaer is a physician but not a psychiatrist, which gives him the distinct advantage of being able to review the relevant mental health literature from the standpoint of another specialty. A neurologist with an obvious command of neuroanatomy and physiology and all of the abnormalities that developmental and accidental trauma produce, he can write compellingly to make the case, which I believe most physicians do not appreciate, that trauma is not universally perceived. The response to trauma depends upon its meaning to the victim and his or her sense of helplessness in a perceived life-threatening situation. It's like the lion chasing the antelope--the same physiological reactions are occurring--the pupils are dilated, the muscles are pumping, the adrenaline and cortisol are high--but the meaning to the lion is lunch and to the antelope it is survival.Dr. Scaer has drawn the same link to whiplash and other disease of traumatic stress, and leads the reader through the relevant physiology, trauma and attunement theory, and the way traumatic reactions manifest themselves in a variety of common diseases. As a hand surgeon for many years, I saw the effects of trauma--dissociation, re-experiencing, and avoidance--displayed in many injured, depressed, and angry patients suffering from what is now called "complex regional pain syndrome" and struggled to treat it. All hand surgeons knew that these patients were "difficult", but even now more of them should read Dr. Scaer's work. "Tormented" would be a more accurate term.The third edition is significantly improved and elaborated over the second, which itself was exceptional. I have read every word of both. There are new chapters on bonding and attunement. The whole text is more "dense", literature references updated and exhaustive. Yet somehow it is still smooth reading for a relative novice to the field. That is the author's skill.Dr. Scaer seems aware that not all allopathic physicians will subscribe to his ideas, but in my opinion they should. These patients have lifelong afflictions that they did not cause, and until some compassionate physician recognizes it, too many will be discounted as "crazy." They deserve better, and it is pioneers like Dr. Scaer who will educate all of us.

Scaer is an honest and courageous clinician: when his patients' course of healing did not add up he resisted dismissing them as most doctors had been doing and continue to do. His basic thesis, that emotional suffering is tied up with the autonomic nervous system, gives support to body-based versus cognitive therapies in general. That said, Scaer is oriented very much above the neck, in the brain. The title states 'the body bears the burden' but he himself sees the body as an implement of the mind, a pack-animal if you will, rather than a seat of the person. Also despite emphasizing that trauma is so widespread as almost to be universal, he still seems to consider it an accident or bad luck. That is, he does not deal with social and family dynamics that are systematically traumatizing people in the physiological sense that he describes.EDIT October 2012: I have just read the authors other book The Trauma Spectrum: Hidden Wounds and Human Resiliency and I saw that he does there get into the 'little traumas' of parenting and social interaction. Because the second edition of this book bears a later copyright than Trauma Spectrum I had assumed there would be nothing in Spectrum that was not here also. I was wrong, read both books.

This one is a tough read. It is written more for clinicians. The info was helpful to me, just the same. I have fibromyalgia and I gained insight into the cause and what could be done about it. I also read, Healing from Trauma by Jasmin Lee Cori. Same concept but an easier read.

This book is chock full of excellent information but be sure you have the "2nd" edition. The author notes the first edition was too technical and, at times, you'll find the second edition a bit too thorough, but well worth the trouble. His insights are groundbreaking.I started reading this book after my Mother died. I wanted to understand why this extraordinary woman stayed with a man who was so emotionally neglectful and abusive. She died a shadow of who she was - why, what happened? Understanding how long term stress affects the physiology of the brain has been huge for me in reconnecting with her, forgiving her, and appreciating who she was, her strengths. I am deeply grateful for this book.It also helps me understand the men and women I meet who seem to be giving away their power. I find I am more compassionate. I am curious, too, what these insights may mean for the neurologically oversensitive (Asperger's, autism, etc.).

This book is like taking a college class....so deep....but so needed. Mind-altering information....on WHY some people continue with lingering pain when others do not. The body "knows"....has held in emotional issues and pain for years......things we deny, ignore, run from........If you read this book, your view of pain will never be the same....if you are a pain patient.....it is a must read. Incredible information....I am a pain patient who read this book last year and it prepared me for what I learned in June....from reading the book "Opening the Cage of Pain" by Rue Anne Hass.......and my pain has lifted. I have my life back.....

The whiplash effect of a motor vehicle accident resembles, in many ways, PTSD and is used here as a metaphor. We think of PTSD as primarily a mental illness, but its physical effects can be painfully deep. The sense of helplessness during the trauma, as a contributing factor to PTSD, doesn't appear in any other literature I've seen on the subject.

Excellent. One of the best books on pain syndromes/trauma connection. Empirical, readable. Lots of information. In the same league as Bessel van der Kolk MD , Lorimer Moseley, Babette Rothschild, and others (list not very long, but long enough). An important read for anyone suffering from CRPS or or other central nervous system related pain syndromes. A great book. and the fantastic bibliography is a huge plus for more great resources! A dense read, but I found it very well worth it.

I've been playing, or at least keeping up with the D&D game ever since Gary Gygax introduced it. All I can say about Wizards of the Coast's latest foray into the genre is that this project could have used some more adulting or at least some adult supervision.When one is writing color and backstory for what is essentially a trading card game, the story can be piecemeal and ephemeral -- hints and suggestions which don't even have to have any internal consistency or hang together with any semblance of substance. This is not the case for an FRPG, where the entire point is story. A trading card game is, at the end of the day, a game. An FRPG is a kind of immersive literature. Details matter. Substance matters. Ravnica is 100 percent whimsical.It is an incredible creative effort full of fantastical ideas, but there is no substance which really ties any of it together. It looks like the product of creative sheltered children who have essentially no real world experience in anything but game playing. It is astonishing to consider a creative team, funded by a relatively successful publisher of FRPG's could put together a group of "creatives" not one of whom seems to exhibit any familiarity with any knowledge of substance in any fields useful for designing a campaign milieu -- fields of study such as: Astronomy, Cosmology, Mythology, Geology, Evolution, Meteorology, Climatology, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Economics, Logistics, Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Politics, Linguistics, Religion, History, etc. Yes, we are talking a fantasy world here, but somewhere there has to be some sort of substance which ties the whimsical together in a way that sustains the suspension of disbelief, or at leas has something interesting to say that resonates with some kind of human experience, so that coherent dramatic stories may be erected on the framework. Ravnica is woefully lacking in this crucial category.Ravnica is a hodge-podge of a dozen playable races, plus who knows how many non-player races, but at least dozens more are intimated. Where do they all live? Why so many different forms when Ravnica is essentially a mono-biome? Why did all of these cultures decide to essentially live cheek-by-jowl in a world-spanning megalopolis? What essential material reality drove such an outcome or sustains it? The creators of Ravnica offer the reader nothing along these lines.Other essential questions, whose answers would have given Ravnica some sort of depth also remain puzzlingly unasked or even considered: Where do all of these different races and creature types live? From where did they come? How did their languages, religions, cultures, politics, etc. evolve?Ravnica is astonishingly two-dimensional. What does their environment and history contribute to their physiology, culture, practices, beliefs, society etc.? Why do the guilds exist? The ideologies of these guilds are entirely abstract and disconnected from any material reality or cause and effect. It was mentioned that religion was once a factor on the planet but no longer. Why? Did the gods just give up?Similarly economics and material reality are entirely neglected, or more accurately, remained unsuspected, by the writers. From Where do the raw materials come? Where do they grow chocolate, or wheat? Where do they brew beer or distil whiskey? Do oranges and sorghum grow in the same biome? Apparently, they do, right in the middle of world-spanning urban environs. Where do they mine iron, or molybdenum, or silver, or platinum or gold? Is it evenly distributed throughout the planet's crust? How does that happen? Does Ravnica have continents or plate-tectonics? If all of the oceans are subterranean, how does that affect ocean ecology? Where do the different kinds of trees grow? How can everything, the entire planet, be a uniform urban megalopolis when different resources are grounded in different essential characteristics? For example, you cannot seriously imagine a wine grape plantation growing on rooftop gardens. Similarly, it takes a certain climate and water resources and land to grow coffee beans. Ravnica gives zero consideration to this. It is entirely whimsy.Commerce is mentioned but it has no substantial rooting in material production. Why do the Orzhov practice pseudo-capitalist syndicalism and the Selesnya embrace a simplisticly unrealistic agrarian socialism when there is essentially no material difference in outcomes, as presented? There is practically no reason to trade, as production and distribution are after-thoughts, at best. Everything is produced everywhere, in equal amounts, for all that the book says on the economy of Ravnica. Things just "happen"...because, reasons. For no reason other than that something needs to be going on in the background to provide color. This would also mean that all trade and exploration are essentially tourism. Of course, one would also have to question what the tourists would be travelling to see. What would be the point?This is a Kardashev Type II Civilization but it's technology is a mix of whimsical high fantasy and quirky steampunk. How did this world civilization even evolve, much less be sustained? No thought was given to this. A globe-spanning megalopolis would severely impact the natural ecology of such a world. No effort is made to handle or explain this, or account for it. The text claims that there is very little in the way of natural wild spaces and yet the world is full to the gunwales with enormous herbivorous and carnivorous megafauna. What supports them? Apparently, they live on air. How does primitive technology handle the waste products build up that a city-world full of such beasts would produce? Nineteenth century New York city was careening toward a full-scale disaster due to only horse manure until the advent of the internal combustion engine. Even given "magic," such a clean up by the Golgari, a guild notably lacking in either magic or tech, would require at least a little explaining, if it is to have any substance or the story any coherence. The book offers the DM nothing in the way of help for extracting any kind of coherent story rooted some sort of consistent system.All of the cultures are crammed together into a multiculturally diverse mix of ethnicities which extend from horizon to horizon and pole to pole. The effect of this is that the entire planet Is not "multi-cultural;" it is entirely uniform in its crazy-quilt distribution of everybody everywhere, such that, as Gertrude Stein said of Oakland, California, "There's no 'there,' there. That is to say, once one has seen one corner of Ravnica one has seen it all, as the setting's authors present it. The multiculture has been essentially stagnant, and its history, geography, and uniformly diverse (an oxymoron) cultural mix, practically featureless and unchanging for ten thousand years. How is this conducive to any kind of drama? Clue: it isn't. There's no history, only monotony. There is no substance upon which to found a lasting campaign. Once the DM has exhausted the two dozen or so tropes that a setting like Ravnica will support, there's nothing left to see, without an enormous load of work on the DM's part. Good luck with that.

This is a great book for a DM who wants to set an adventure within the Magic: The Gathering world of Ravnica.This is a great book for a Magic: The Gathering player who wants to read lots of lore about the world of Ravnica.This is NOT a great book for a D&D player. It only has 2 new subclasses and a handful of races. There are new backgrounds but they are specific to the world of Ravnica.What this book does:- Explains the world of Ravnica and its backstory; especially dives into the backstory for the races, places, and guilds of Ravnica. This is 80% of the book.- Provides gameplay details for the races of Ravnica.- Provides 2 new subclass options (Cleric: Order Domain & Druid: Circle of Spores).- Provides gameplay details for the guilds of Ravnica (treated as backgrounds).- Provides lots of information about how to craft a D&D adventure within Ravnica.- Provides some Ravnica inspired treasure/magic items.- Provides stat blocks for the creatures/people of Ravnica.

First, the content is great and I will update my review should WOTC provide a decent copy to me.The book quality is terrible. The copy I got has all the old trademarks of terrible print and binding quality that plagues all of the 5th edition books. The pages are wrinkled both along the edges and on the face of pages, specifically near the binding. WTF Wizards of the Coast, get your game together here, you have had this issue for 4 YEARS! It is unacceptable.

I'm going to start off by saying that I'm not a magic the gathering fan, so my reception to the ideal was less than ecstatic.I will say that you need not be any kind of magic player to enjoy the added flavor of a new setting. The main thing I wanted most out of this product was new races where you'll see stats on centaur, Minotaurs, simic hybrids, loxodon, and vedalken. Also some other fun things concerning the book are the monster manual sections and the new list of magic items. All in all, the book was worth the price in my opinion ,even with my reservations concerning the setting.

As someone who loved the idea of having a campaign set in the largest, most well known location in Magic the Gathering, this book is all I will need to hopefully set my adventurers on a deep story driven quest in to Ravnica. Unfortunately for me, my book got a bit dinged up in shipping. Nothing outrageous like I have seen in other D&D book releases, but a little disheartening none the less. minus the slight damage, consider this a 5 star review.

Update. Ink smeared easily.Book came in good condition.This book offers great detail in introducing guilds on a new campaign setting or if you are an experienced DM adding guilds to your current world.

I'm a fan of both 5e and the Ravnica sets in MTG. This book allows one to combine the two into a really cool 5e campaign that takes advantage of all the best parts of Ravnica. Keep in mind that this book is *NOT* a storyline or adventure guide. There is a one-shot adventure for level 1s included but the rest of the book is all about character creation, info on the guilds, info on a large section of Ravnica's world, new items, new monsters, etc. Basically everything you need to create and drop new PCs into a Ravnica setting.I'm looking forward to DMing my new campaign in January!
