Corelli's Mandolin: A Novel

Amazon.com Review

In the early days of the Second World War, before Benito Mussolini invaded Greece, Dr. Iannis practices medicine on the island of Cephalonia, accompanied by his daughter, Pelagia, to whom he imparts much of his healing art. Even when the Italians do invade, life isn't so bad--at first anyway. The officer in command of the Italian garrison is the cultured Captain Antonio Corelli, who responds to a Nazi greeting of "Heil Hitler" with his own "Heil Puccini," and whose most precious possession is his mandolin. It isn't long before Corelli and Pelagia are involved in a heated affair--despite her engagement to a young fisherman, Mandras, who has gone off to join Greek partisans. Love is complicated enough in wartime, even when the lovers are on the same side. And for Corelli and Pelagia, it becomes increasingly difficult to negotiate the minefield of allegiances, both personal and political, as all around them atrocities mount, former friends become enemies, and the ugliness of war infects everyone it touches. British author Louis de Bernières is well known for his forays into magical realism in such novels as The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. Here he keeps it to a minimum, though certainly the secondary characters with whom he populates his island--the drunken priest, the strongman, the fisherman who swims with dolphins--would be at home in any of his wildly imaginative Latin American fictions. Instead, de Bernières seems interested in dissecting the nature of history as he tells his ever-darkening tale from many different perspectives. Corelli's Mandolin works on many levels, as a love story, a war story, and a deconstruction of just what determines the facts that make it into the history books. --Alix Wilber

This book was recommended to me when I was in the American Book Store in Paris. At the time he said that its a book that you will not put down. When I first tried to read it and put it down and go back to it. Then I was so involved in the story, in the characters that I could not put it down. He told me when he recommended it that it might take a few starts. He was on target. When you choose to spend a few hours in the world of Captain Correlli you will want to share this book with people that you really care about since it is soo special. Its a book to reread. Don't watch the movie, its alien to the book. when I was on the last page, I thought what could match this now as a most incredible read. For a while nothing. It stays with you. you care about the characters and I laughed I cried was sad and its in my bookcase as Captain Correlli's Mandolin and as Corelli's Mandolin. the US and bought in Paris copies. Writing this review perhaps its time to open it again.

This has to be the best book I have read this year. DeBernieres has woven a masterpiece out of words that flow into each other in what I can only call poetic philosophy. It has all the elements that I want in a book: historical fiction, varied and intriguing points of view expounded by unforgettable characters, , comedy, tragedy, deep love, loss, despair and redemption.I love a book that truly stretches my knowledge of history, touches chords of recognition over and over, and sends me to the dictionary often. I have read a lot over 55 years and pride myself on having an extensive vocabulary which I actually use on a daily basis, but Dr Bernieres challenged me to to a fuel of verbal pyrotechnics which he invariably won.The story centers on the Greek island of Cephalonia from the thirties to the nineties, focusing on the constant stream of invaders and catastrophes suffered by the tenacious population. But it's not just the story that grabs you; it's the way the story is told. There are sections of stream of consciousness writing, almost prose poetry, that sucked me into a vortex of thought that I found impossible to pull out of until the author finished and let go of my mind. I know I sound a bit pompous and grandiose, but I feel a deep connection to this book. In some ways it reminded me of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose without the medieval whodunit aspect, but rather shares with that book a eloquence and profundity of thought. If you're looking for an easy read, this is not the book for you, but if you love to get lost in a book while following the flow of an interesting mind, you must experience this imaginative creation.

Corelli's Mandolin is a passionate, inventive, funny, and extravagant novel. Set on the Ionian island of Cephallonia in Greece during the Second World War, the novel is largely the story of the local physician, Dr. Iannis, and his attractive, but willful, daughter Pelagia. The story follows Pelagia’s first love with Mandras, a local fisherman who leaves to fight in the war. Soon after, Cephallonia is invaded by Italian soldiers. An Italian captain, Antonio Corelli, is assigned to live in their home, where he soon begins a romantic intrigue with Pelagia. The novel has a long list of eccentric and engaging minor characters: Carlo, the secretively gay soldier, the strong man Velisarios, the wonderfully curious Lemoni, and Pelagia’s pet pine marten, Psipsina. Some of these characters even carry their own storyline.Although it could be called a historical romance, Corelli's Mandolin is also a biting political satire. It chronicles the horrors and absurdity of war, as well as the boredom of occupation. It abounds with all the grand topics of literature. De Bernières is a master of the written word and a gifted storyteller. There are rich characterizations and witty dialogue; at times I laughed out loud. However the book is not without problems. The introduction seems long and disjointed (Captian Corelli doesn’t show up until you’re a third of the way through the story), and the ending seems drawn-out and unpersuasive. However, if you will patiently wait and you’re your way through, a story well worth reading emerges.

Usually we read a book, and, if we enjoy it, we go see the movie when it comes out. Often we are disappointed with the movie. In this case I saw the movie before I read this book. I loved the movie but was hesitant about Mr. De Bernieres, having read somewhere that he was something of a surrealist, and I prefer straight storytelling. "Corelli's Mandolin" is a wonder of a book: full of great characters, a beautifully described setting, and lots of tension and conflict. Dr. Iannis lives on the island of Cephallonia with his daughter Pelagia, who serves as his housekeeper and apprentice. She is engaged to a local fisherman who is going off to fight the Italians in Albania. With the help of the Germans, the Italians are defeated in Albania, and the Italians, Captain Antonio Corelli among them, occupy the island. Corelli is billeted in Dr. Iannis's house and soon Pelagia and he fall in love. When the Italians surrender to the Allies, the Germans take control of the island the Italians are massacred , but Corelli survives and the Greeks help him escape. The last third of the book tells Pelagia's story after Corelli leaves. She never marries and has a hard, uncertain life. It is only when she has reached old age that Corelli returns to find her. This last part of the book is not as good as the first two thirds. It is told in narrative summary as you would read in a history book. If I were the author I think I would have ended "Corelli's Mandolin" when he escaped from Cephallonia, and written a second novel about Pelagia's life afterward. That way he would have the room to tell her story fully with characters and dialogue and immediate scenes. It is easy to see why none of this made it into the movie. Despite this criticism, I fully recommend "Corelli's Mandolin".

Man I am glad that all that segregation BS disappeared in my lifetime! I saw Satchel once do a pitching exhibition during a Globetrotters' game, where he even pitched a basketball with deadly accuracy and speed. In this book you can learn about the Negro Leagues (there were two) and some of the players in them. Satchel, of course, who did go on to "the show" eventually, but also greats such as Josh Gibson, who never did make it because he died ten months before Jackie Robinson was called. That is a terrible shame. Josh and Satch were friends, and also rivals in baseball. The meeting recounted in this book is so outrageous that, frankly, it could never happen in major league ball. But it really did happen, and I wish *I* could travel back in time because I'd love to see it! You won't believe how Satch messed with Josh's mind. Thing is, according to the author, the dialogue all comes from Satchel's own notes, so all I can saw is "Wow!" Buy it, you'll like it.

My fifth grade boys LOVE this series. I can't keep them on the shelf and they are creating waiting lists for each one. Highly recommend for reluctant readers who like sports.

Great series. Loved all the books in this series. Through listening and reading these books, it has greatly helped my students in their overall language arts skills.

I bought this for my son to read during the summer reading months. He is 8 years old and loved reading about another great African American baseball player.

My students love Dan Gutman books and love this series of Historic Fiction! They are mostly read by the boys in my classroom, but there are always a few girls that will pick them up. Dan Gutman books are great!

My 12 year old son refuses to read much of anything these days. He is very into sports and I discovered this book is one that he WANTED to read. The book is apparently quite exciting and engaging because he actually asked me for the others in the series!I only wish there were more!

These books are smart and engaging, especially in a house where everyone is obsessed with baseball! My kids enjoyed them and learned a lot.

Great Seller....just what we wanted.

In Stop Being a Bitch. Quit Your Lame Ass Job and Move To Cambodia he talks about the onset of culture shock as something entirely normal. He gives luggage packing tips, ticket and flying advice and helps people find temporary and permanent housing upon arrival. The advice is solid but mostly he reassures people that the process is simple. No Joke talks about setting up a bank account, phone, and internet there, also health and safety. Plus what to do about scams, beggars, prostitutes, drugs, police corruption. The cost of living is addressed as well, as is haggling and the idea of saving face. The book addresses a few cities briefly, but mostly the action is in Phnom Penh. In his own style, No Joke not only provides good info but also motivates people to get out of their familiar routine and take an adventure to a place like Cambodia. Please see the full review in issue #101 of Red Fez (dot net).

I gave this three stars only because I respect what a motivator this book could be for some. I come from a military background, so I tend to side with the author on things, such as if you don't follow your dreams then you're a bitch. All in all, this book is a very basic run through on how to initially get started with a move to Cambodia. After my military career I will move there myself, and certainly I have visited there already. I found a few of the things he said were useful, and that was worth the few bucks I spent on this. Go ahead, part with a few bucks yourself, and while you're at it... Stop being a bitch and follow your dreams!

I had to laugh out loud a few times at the gonzo nature of the author. He's certainly enthusiastic. This book is useful to someone who is totally new to traveling and provides some insight into the current costs and logistics of living in Phnom Penh.

Nice eye-opener as proof that anything is possible, just do it! I've considered leaving everything behind and starting over in Puerto Rico.

Good stuff in this! It's worth it.

This book is forward and straight to the point. If you feel lost in your life, you need to read this. It doesn’t take insane amounts of money to travel the world and change your life. Stop being a bitch, buy this damn book, so you can quit your lame ass job and move to Cambodia.

this guy took their advice and took a Holiday in Cambodia

Braeton has written a nice book for anyone who wants to quit there job and start a new life in Cambodia. If your looking for an adventure and outline on how to do it cheap and want to save yourself time, money and frustration buy this book.

Living History, by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Amazon.com Review

As with most books written by politicians while in office (or at least aiming for one), Living History is, first and foremost, safe. There are interesting observations and anecdotes, the writing is engaging, and there is enough inside scoop to appeal to those looking for a bit of gossip, but there are no bombshells here and it is doubtful the book will change many minds about this polarizing figure. This does not mean the work is without merit, however, for Hillary Clinton has much to say about her experience as first lady, which is the primary focus of the book. Those interested in these experiences and her commentary on them will find the book worth reading; those looking for revelations will be disappointed. Beginning with a brief outline of her childhood, college years, introduction to politics, and her courtship with Bill Clinton, Clinton covers a wide variety of topics: life on the campaign trail, her troubled tenure as leader of the President's Task Force on National Health Care Reform, meeting with foreign leaders, and her work on human rights, to name a few. By necessity, she also addresses the various scandals that plagued the administration, from Travelgate to Whitewater to impeachment, though she does not go into great detail about each one; rather, she seems content to simply state her case and move on without trying to settle too many old scores. Along the way, she offers many apologies, though perhaps not the kind some would expect. She does not shy away from her "vast right-wing conspiracy" comment, for instance, though she does wish that she had expressed herself differently. Regarding the Monica Lewinsky scandal, she maintains that her husband initially lied to her, as he did the rest of the country, and did not come clean until two days prior to his grand jury testimony. Calling his betrayal "the most devastating, shocking and hurtful experience of my life," she explains what the aftermath was like personally and why she has elected to stand by her man. In all, Living History is an informative book that goes a long way toward humanizing one of the most recognizable, and controversial, women of our age. Shawn Carkonen

From Booklist

The early reactions to Hillary Clinton's much-anticipated memoir (no prepublication review copies were distributed) have amounted to a kind of referendum on the person rather than a review of the book. Everyone has a theory about Clinton and why she wrote her book, but few of the commentators have bothered to read the volume, and none seem interested in reflecting on how it stacks up as an autobiography. In fact, it stacks up pretty darn well. Certainly the book has faults. Many early critics have pointed to the almost 600 pages and called the book too long. Wrong again; in some places, it isn't long enough. For instance, Clinton virtually flies over the Gennifer Flowers affair, and the other women in Bill Clinton's life--except for Monica and Paula--are not mentioned at all. She could have gained some space by not tipping her hat to so many "good friends"; myriad people are so described. What Hillary does very well, however, is to give readers a sense of who she is, starting with an effective description of her childhood and college years that manages not only to reveal her character but also to evoke the era vividly and in great detail. Her evolution as a wife and mother, as First Lady, and as a political lightning rod is portrayed in an engaging fashion, and her discussions of political policy, while occasionally dry, are well reasoned and worth reading. The book works especially well when the private and public Mrs. Clintons come together; for example, when she spearheads the health-care wars as her own father is dying. Only true Clinton haters will refuse to see her as a woman of faith or dispute the fact she loves her husband. Those two qualities pervade the pages. This book took Us back into the Fascinating, Struggling and the High's and Low's of Hillary and Bill Clinton's Family. And Also the Remarkable Journey of Bill Clinton becoming A Governor. And President Of The United States Of America, Twice. An Also Hillary Clinton as a Governess. And First Lady Of United States Of America, Twice. Also Hillary Fascinating Journey to Becoming The First First Lady to Hold the position as a Senator. New York was the Beautiful State Hillary Clinton Chose to be a Senator of, after leaving the White House. Later she Ran to Be Nominated as President Of The United States of America. The Nomination, she Won. She was the First Woman Ever to be Nominated by Any Party For The Presidency Of United States Of America. Kudos to the Clinton's. This was a Wonderful Book.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir of Secretary Clinton's life during her childhood and the White House years. I appreciated her candor and letting us see her experiences from her viewpoint.

This book was very informative, and a shock. I wasn't alive during thetime period of the book, but it was a great history to have so I could better understand Hillary's later memoirs, so I started with the first one. I was pushing myself to read it at many times, but I'm glad I did. The book inspired me to look into a career with politics, and inspired me to start campaigning as well. I'm blown away with her courage and determination to help the lives of others, in our country and around the world. It was slow, repititive, and tedious; but if you have a long attention span and some determination to get through it, you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

Excellent book.

First I'd like to say that I do not agree with Hillary's philosophy.but the book she wrote was interesting, and a lot of fun to read. it was a story of her life, starting from her childhood. she even included her parents' life before she was born. it was nice to see a politician sharing her life-story with readers who want to get to know her better.to all those who want people to believe the worst in her, I have to say: this woman might not agree with you on issues, but she is still a nice lady, who had an amazingly interesting life.

Hillary is one of the most villified woman in American history and the knee-jerk negative reaction of some of the Amazon's reviewers (many who apparently never bothered to read this book) is just an another example of the right wing conspiracy against her. Sure, she isn't a saint. But who is? George Bush? Give me a break. This is her AUTObiography, therefore, she casts her story in the most positive light possible. Did anyone expect anything else? The most interesting part of this book is her pre-White House days. The Clintons could have been a very wealthy couple (both are Yale law grads) if their goal was money. Instead, they have spent many relatively financially modest years in Arkanasas performing mainly public service. Hillary's only private sector job was with the Rose Law Firm, which she became a partner. They are the only White House couple in the last 50 years not to have their own separate private vacation home. The book also reveals Hillary's incredible work ethic, intelligence, and loyalty to her husband. Say what you will about her, but I don't think any of the three can be questioned. Overall, I found Hillary's life to be inspirational to all those who aspire to rise to the top from a rather modest beginning. Finally, I didn't know Bill Clinton's early life was so difficult. His biological father died before he was born and his stepfather regularly beat his mother until he was 15, when he was finally big enough to defend his mother. I imagine there has been many violent encounters between Bill and his stepfather. I wonder why Bill still kept his stepfather's last name "Clinton".

Hillary is such an intelligent and intriguing personality, but unfortunately this collection of essays (which is how it reads) is downright dull...it is more like the narrative that would accompany a photo album or scrapbook than an autobiography. It could have benefitted greatly from more thorough editing...and one of my pet peeves that ended up distracting me throughout was the incessant use of the word "friend(s)." Check it out: barely a paragraph goes by without describing someone that way (Newt & Monica not withstanding). I'd hate to have to tackle her Christmas Card list.Hopefully, as her political career continues to unfold we will see more candid, opinionated writings from this history-making personality. She owes it to her supporters...and to historians!

Still trying to complete this book, about 80% complete. I have learned alot from, and enjoyed this book.
