The beginning of the book is good and I love the idea of the villa. Sadly the writer doesn't spend enough time on descriptions such as the scenery on the island, the villa or the characters. I want to be taken away when I'm reading a book and this book doesn't do that; the best you get is the scent of ocean and rosemary in the air...an old villa on an island has so much potential for wonderful descriptions. The characters are okay, not overly dimensional but I still was interested in knowing how things turned out for them. The editing is weird in this book, the writer uses the word "smelt" constantly for the word smelled. Perhaps this is a dialect I am not familiar with but this really bothered me while reading. She always used the word "got" with the words have, has or had when the word should have been "gotten". On page 158 I wonder if an editing note actually got written into the book because there is a paragraph of two long sentences, then the word "To:" and the same sentences repeated. Weird! The ending of this book seems a little abrupt, could have been much better and the Glossary of six Jewish words at the end is a little odd. Overall, an okay book for a quick read but not on my list of keepers.
I really like historical fiction and often read books that contain 2 connected stories. The authors weave the background story with the more recent story in a way that helps the reader get a full picture. Unfortunately this author jumped back and forth from one time period to another after just a few pages so it was difficult to follow the story line. It would have helped if she grouped some sections together before jumping to the other time period. There were a number of spots with poor grammar or a word in the middle of the sentence that didn't belong. The most dramatic part of the story happened at the end. Instead of developing that, the author just dropped it as if she was tired of writing the story.
I loved this book! This is the fifth book of Lily’s that I’ve read and the fifth book I’ve loved. What an amazing author! Lily has a way of setting up a story that pulls the reader in immediately and keeps her (or him) completely involved throughout the book. I loved the dual storylines and the way the story flowed back and forth seamlessly between the two time periods. Lily creates characters that are intriguing, well-developed, and by the end, like old friends one doesn’t want to lose. I found the both the present day and the historical parts to be equally fascinating. I highly recommend The Island Villa and I hope that many other readers will choose to give this book and all of Lily’s books a try. You will not be disappointed!
This was an interesting book, I had a hard time jumping back and between present and past. I struggled a lot at the beginning as to understanding why they kept going from present day Formentera to Formentera 1718. I knew it was family but so far back it was hard to connect. If you like a book that gives background into where the characters come from you might enjoy it if like me it is hard to jump back and forth I would have second thoughts about reading it.
Loved the book. A little slow starting, but when it ended I wished for more. Had that Gone With the End finish, that lets you imagine what happens next. Maybe Lily will write another story and tell us. Or maybe not. Good genealogical background, and acquaints the reader with an island and a people that many like me have not heard about.
This was not what I usually read, but the word island caught me so I bit!!! It is just a nice easy read, somewhat predictable, but a nice story to enjoy on a lazy rainy afternoon!!! Starts out with the sadness of a young widow, but builds as she finds her way out of her grief to a new exciting life.
Going back & forth got confusing a couple times but rereading a couple pages helped. It really starting getting good at the end. Go figure !
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story. I especially enjoyed the parts relating to Jewish history. I usually only read psychological thrillers, so this was a nice change of pace.
