Wow, what a read. You know what? This actually kind of reminded me of The Office - and not the popular American one, but the original English one with Ricky Gervais. Just chock full of interesting (and when I say interesting I mean INTERESTING) characters. Of course, the characters and the dialogue between is the driving force behind the book, and you’ll love every second of it. Also, the nice things about books like these is they read SUPER easily - given the comedic nature of the tone and the dialogue-driven style, it can certainly be a less than a week read, if that’s what you’re after. I brought mine along on a family weekend beach trip, started it on Friday evening and was done by Sunday evening.Also, if your home is in the U.K., you’ll get a heck of a kick out of all the cultural references, slang, etc. And if you’re not a UK native? You’ll get a kick out of it just the same, albeit with a different (and perhaps even more hilarious) perspective.It’s written in a very unique style, and will have me looking out for (hopefully) more of Doyle’s work in the future. Highly recommend you give it a go.
London Irish Dublin English is a quirky, humorous read about a Londoner named Donal who aspires to be accepted as Irish. In the 1980s, he decides to move to Ireland, even though the country is facing a recession. Donal is a computer salesman employed by an international IT company and if he wants to stay in Dublin he needs to secure a major deal by the year’s end.The book covers Donal’s year in Dublin and his quest to close a major deal. But this is easier said than done. Aside from the challenges involved in making the big sale, Donal has to learn to maneuver in an office filled with some extremely idiosyncratic characters. He is not always successful, which leads to some extremely awkward and often humorous moments. In addition, Donal’s English accent gives him away, and he is not regarded as Irish, which he so desperately wants.The book raises some interesting points about national identity, office politics, and the life of a computer salesman in the 1980s, and the humorous tone makes it an entertaining read.
Daniel M. Doyle’s work explores the nature of taking the less beaten path, specifically the narrative of a middle-aged salesman who enthusiastically reaches for the opportunity to be relocated to Dublin, Ireland. While the majority of his colleagues and generational cohorts gravitate toward the trendiness of London, the protagonist follows his love of Irish culture to work and live on the Emerald Isle.He eats, sleeps, and breathes Irish culture, and while his accent is distinctly English, his heart is a veritable four leaf clover. The book humorously follows the highs and lows of the protagonists as he adjusts to Irish life, and portrays the fraternal mixing and mingling of business with pleasure in the ubiquitous, warm, and wood-paneled bar scene.I found the narrative particularly interesting in its portrayal of a man adjusting to a new culture that he has always admired. Also interesting was the portrayal of Irish culture, where people from many walks of life and different social strata mix and mingle with great equality and merriment in the bar scene, over the commonality of good drink.This book makes me want to go to Ireland and enjoy a beer with the protagonists and his cohorts. I also appreciated the humorous commentary on some of the nuances in the world of tech sales. The descriptive style of the book is such that you'll feel you are right there alongside the main character.A highly recommended read for its humor, and for anyone interested in getting a good look at Irish culture.
I am someone who really appreciates the complex relationship between the Irish and the British. To start with this novel, I would recommend at least a general understanding of the history of the two nations, and at least a general appreciation for the different points of contestation between the two cultures. That being said, the protagonist of this novel seems to be strongly rooted in the author himself, whose bio can tell you a lot about what the heart behind this book is. The story is equal turns informative and hilarious, although again, much of the humor is rooted in somewhat specialized fields, i.e. the IT industry, marketing, and Irish culture and history. Those who know or have been to Dublin will appreciate the approach to the location, which has been the subject of many literary feats, notably, James Joyce's Ulysses. I believe that Doyle is inspired by both self-exploration and the literary masters who have come before him, and at times I felt like I was walking the streets of Dublin myself. The book is well-written and Doyle is obviously playing to his many strengths regarding cultural identity and the sales industry. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for . fun, engaging, and informative read.
London Irish Dublin English narrates an appealing story that grows on you a bit more as you read on. To start with, perhaps it would be reasonable to learn a bit on English/Irish background to fully grasp the sentiment behind Donal, the main character of this book, although I don’t believe it plays that big of a part in the main plot of the story. With a likable and colorful set of characters, you find your self rooting for Donal as he embarks on a big business deal for the company he works for. Using his wit, he cleverly sets the pieces in motion for the deal to come through, as with pieces on a chess board. What winds up mesmeric about this story is the way the author takes the reader through the intricacies of the sales world without being tedious if this is not the reader’s subject of interest. It’s not a treaty on how to be the best salesperson in the world, so to speak. One of the highlights of this book is how the author takes you on a tour through Dublin’s inner streets, bars, pubs, and every day (or night) life. Daniel Doyle closes the book in splendid form by briefly weighing on the character’s emotive reflections, almost creating a sense of nostalgia which many will find relatable.
