The title of this book gives the impression that it covers the XE2 IDE and the libraries that support its visual components but it only covers the programming language itself. Plus, having XE2 in the title gives the impression that your book is outdated because Embarcadero cranks out a new version of the IDE/language about every 6 months. Unfortunately language updates are published with each new version of the IDE so when I say XE2, am I talking about the IDE, the Delphi language, or both. It's not always clear. From what I've seen, most language changes during these 6 month updates are very minor and the majority of the update is in support of the iOS and Android platforms. I'm new to Delphi but I believe language updates should be tracked with their own version numbers that differ from from IDE like every other language I've dealt with. This would allow Embarcadero to update the libraries that support iOS and Android without necessarily updating the IDE and makes it easier for developers to keep up with the current IDE ($$). Unfortunately this is complicated by the fact that Borland used to call their language/IDE updates "Delphi #.0". XE# should only refer to the IDE and the unique features it implements. XE2 could now refer to RAD studio which also incorporates C++. Ok, I'm done ranting for now. With that said, this is a great Delphi language reference. It's not as comprehensive as the online RTL reference at the following link but it's easier to find things in the book.http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/XE6/en/Using_the_RTL_(Run-Time_Library)I find stuff much faster in this book. Searching the online API library seems kind of hit or miss. Nothing beats a good old fashioned table of contents / index combination. I only turn to the online resource if I can't find it in the book. Poor title isn't enough to deduct from my rating, this is a solid book. Some reviewers deducted stars for no VCL, FMX, or Live Bindings coverage. That's understandable because the books title gives the impression the book covers the IDE. An IDE book would cover Live Bindings because that's implemented by the IDE as well as the visual component libraries, VCL and FMX. A book on core language features will NOT cover VCL or FMX. The VCL and FMX are not specific to the Delphi language. I encourage prospective buyers to click on the book's picture and read the table of contents to ensure it contains what they are looking for. This analogy may not be the best but it's like Stroustrup's C++ book titled "The C++ Programming Language" in that it covers the basic syntax, types, OOP, etc. and then goes on to cover the parts of the RTL the author deemed most relevant. Not even Stroustrup's book could cover the entire C++ STL but he covered what he thought should be covered. Yes, this book has some typos but not as many as Stroustroup's last book....lol. Typos are the biggest reason I didn't give this book 5 stars. Edit the book better, change the title to clarify what it covers and publish a second edition and it will be a five star book. Delphi books are few in number and I believe this is the best Delphi 'language reference' published in the past 10 years.

This is a very well written Delphi book, good as a desktop reference, and for experience users to catch up with the latest XE2 version. As a "Foundations" book, it doesn't touch much on the IDE features, but it contains some advanced topics as well. The style somewhat reminds me of another good Delphi book, i.e, "Delphi in a Nutshell". Both are written in the formal, concise and academic style. Probably this is not the starting book for Delphi beginners with 0 experience.Given there are not many good Delphi books since 1990s, this book, with more than 600 pages definitely worth more than 5 stars. I believe it is very reasonably priced compare to Dr. Bob's expensive coursewares (which are also good fairly speaking given no other Delphi books but it is really really expensive).Looking forward to this author's more books. Hats off to him.

I bought this book after buying Delphi XE4 (and having been away from Delphi - in C - for more than ten years). The title suggested to me an 'upgrade' from my old 'Mastering Delphi 6' book, but I think that 'Foundations' is not quite the right title. Yes you will find Delphi (Pascal) fundamentals, OOP, IO streams, Packages etc, but nothing on VCL or Firemonkey 'foundations'.While my 'Mastering Delphi 6' still provides most of the Delphi XE4 basics, there some significant additions/changes etc in Delphi XE4, which I found very hard to get information on. In my mind 'Language Basics' and 'OOP review' either do not belong in a book of this title OR all the other significant items (such as controls) need to be covered too.But don't get me wrong. This is still a great book with much useful information. Carefully 'Look Inside' before you buy and decide if that is what you are looking for when buying a Foundations book.If you need to bone up on various aspects of Delphi (as I did after many years of abstinence), you may also wish to consult 'Mastering Delphi 6'. Yes it's old, but most of it still applies.

Like another reviewer here, I have delayed writing a review, but after owning the book for a few months, I continue to find that on opening almost any topic, there are typos which make it unsuitable for those new to the language, and annoying for the rest of us. Some topics are discussed well beyond need, others are so lightly covered as to be of little use. And Live Bindings, for example, is unmentioned.I would have liked to write a glowing review, especially as so little is now being written about this fine language. There is coverage here of much that is worth reading, but the exposition makes it impossible to take in other than small doses.

I've used Turbo Pascal from the beginning and now Delphi XE2. I haven't finished "Delphi XE2 Foundations" yet I am amazed at the functions and procedures in XE2 that I had no idea existed. Delphi documentation is very poor; thank you for this effort. What we need is an updated version of the desktop quick reference that was titled "Delphi in a Nutshell." I hope the author of "Delphi XE2 Foundations" is reading these reviews of his book and takes an interest in producing a current desktop quick reference of all functions, procedures, and constants available in the current version of Delphi.

Ignore the XE2 in the title, the book is essentially a solid introduction to the Delphi language. I just bought a copy and I'm already learning new aspects about Delphi I was unaware or vaguely aware of. Highly recommended for either someone who dabbles in Delphi or is a new developer. Has a good balance of text and examples and the index has good coverage. My only small criticism is that the book probably should be printed in a larger format, 7 in by 10 would be good, currently it's a bit on the small size which makes to book quite thick

If you haven't done math in a really, really long time or have a humanities background, the Manhattan Prep 8-book set is 100% necessary to get a competitive GRE score. I can't say enough good things about these books. I combined the books and practice problems with Greenlight Test Prep videos on YouTube (free) and got the math help I needed. I did not pay for prep classes and I can't see doing so if you are a disciplined person. I've been out of school for 6 years, haven't had math in about 10 years, and had no problems jumping back in with these tools. The books also come with a free online test simulator with lots more practice problems. I was very pleased with their practice tests, but do make sure you are well-practiced in the ETS practice tests too. The scores I got on the practice tests were exactly what I got on the real test. I did great and got into the B-school I wanted. :)

One thing's for sure, there's a lot of these cards. Unfortunately, they're not principle oriented, they question oriented. In other words, they're basically a GRE math quiz in notcard form. If you need to start from scratch, like many folks who haven't taken math courses in a number of years, these cards wont get you there. You'll need preliminary material to get you started.

I tutor the GRE, and I generally recommend the Manhattan Prep set of eight GRE books, of which this is one. As a stand-alone purchase, this book is a good resource for additional TC and SE practice, but overall, its question realism is lacking.I'll address the realism first. Now that ETS has published a verbal practice book, the need for Manhattan Prep practice material has diminished. Manhattan questions do not dependably capture the essence, nuances, and complexity of authentic GRE questions. Make sure you can do all of the ETS TC and SE questions in your sleep as well as being able to EXPLAIN them to a friend before you worry about supplementing. But I know some of you are hardcore. This book will be a good supplement once you're truly done with the ETS questions (so will the Manhattan 5-lb. book).Technique: Manhattan Prep's technique is good. Just keep in mind that the more you practice, the better you'll get, and the more you'll see how you have to adapt your technique at different times. Of course, real ETS verbal questions are the best teachers for this. In other words, Manhattan's TC and SC technique will work okay out of the box, but you'll want to refine it as you go.

This is a decent book with plenty of useful exercises. But I have to admit I don't really like Manhattan Prep's writing style. There's something a bit "sour" about it. Princeton Review may be no better (or even worse) in terms of quality, but they do have a friendlier style of presentation. It has to be said also that Manhattan Prep does not grade your essays on the online exam. They give them to you under timed conditions, but you don't get any feedback. They need to start offering that service, and maybe they can outdo Princeton Review, who are incompetent in essay grading. They offer more free online exams with book purchases than Princeton Review does, which is good. Their materials are also rather more difficult, which could be good practice for the real thing depending on how you look at it.

I love the Manhattan Prep series. It helps you improve your score without learning a 1000 vocab words. The practice questions are sorted by difficulty which is helpful if you are trying to project your score. It also comes with 6 free practice tests.

Somewhat succeeds in being all-encompassing in that it covers most of the concepts that would come up in the GRE, fails on the difficulty and creativity front. These flashcards may be useful for people who are starting from point zero and have no recollection or knowledge of the concepts required for the GRE Math section, but otherwise a waste of money.

I really enjoyed using the Manhattan Prep set. I purchased this together with 5LB exercise to prepare for verbal. The book was written in a very positive and encouraging tone, and I felt like I was learning with a real instructor. I scored 167/170 after 1 month of intensive study. I did all the verbal exercise in Mprep, including 6 online tests, and I think it really helped.

Clear, thorough, with practice throughout that helps you learn the ideas.1. a few questions with each new set of ideas2. review questions3. practice test at the end of each (relatively short) section4. tests for the whole book, from easier problems to harderAND it explains the answers to all the questionsIt definitely bumped up my GRE score
