I get why people have rated this book so highly, it's only $10. However, I question how much it's actually worth it. There's blatantly a ton of just straight borderline unusable tables and descriptions, mostly empty pages, and repetitive/uninspired content. For instance, there's a d6 table that goes through different types of terrain; when it wouldn't have taken much effort to bump that to a d10 or d20 table, or split that into several d6 tables for each terrain archetype. It's just pointless to have tables that small when any GM could come up with woods, plains, desert, etc. on the fly.There are a few good ideas in the encounter/plot hook table (don't remember what it's actually called) and that's definitely why people like this book. However, since you can cut out pretty much the rest of the book, with the exception of a couple good bits in the magic items section, I feel like $10 is just a bit too much compared to other supplemental books. I paid $10 for books like Fever-dreaming Marlinko and Deep carbon observatory, which have far more content and a lot more DM/GM inspiration. In my opinion, they could have taken out the few good d100 tables, sold them as a pdf for $2-3 on one of the many sites that offer that, and called it a day. A whole book seems... like it's stretching the material too thin.Tl;Dr: if you are looking for a little generic DM inspiration book for a couple random encounters or quick plot hooks, it's only $10 and it's not bad. If you are looking for a great resource you can pull on for multiple campaigns, this isn't it. Move along.

Bought for my husband as a gift. He says he could pretty much run a game off this book alone. Super helpful and handy. I took a risk and it paid off.

Love this! I got this for my DnD group to pass around to the current DM, and we love it! SO many handy dandy charts/tables for when you've just exhausted your brain-meats and can't bloody well be bothered to think up a name or a descriptions for something. Need a treasure for your plucky adventurers to find? Book's gotcha covered. Need to decide on a quirky tavern name for your team to meet at before setting off on a grand quest? Book's got that too. Need a quest idea for your party to be sent out on? Book HAS IT! I love the magical items and suggestions for potions. Soooooo much good stuff in this! Anyone DMing a tabletop rpg should have this in their arsenal

This book has saved me so many ways while DMing for my several different campaigns. It has so many interesting little tidbits that have added a sense of nuance to my campaigns, and my players definitely use the weapons/items/etc to their advantage, making it unique and fun! Because there's really no stats on some of the items you can make it flexible for different tabletop games, which works well I imagine for most people (I just do 5E). Highly recommended!!

I've been running tabletop adventures since about age 10 and one thing I've always struggled with is ensuring variety and volume in flavor items found while scavenging. This book, small though it is, helps solve that problem.After getting this book, I instituted a policy of "always find something". The world of my campaign is weird and interesting, and every time a player searches a container, room, or defeated foe, I want them to find something that builds that idea a little more.So, whenever a player searches for items, if I haven't placed anything in the room or container in question, I give them something from this book. I tend to mix and match over a couple of roles, and more than once, the flavor items I gave out offhand have inspired players to innovative - and very fun - solutions, from luring an imp to its death with hot pepper paste to taming a drake with sandalwood perfume.The somatic component table is excellent, especially in combination with the verbal and random effect tables. I also enjoy giving players cursed items from the random curses table.

As a newer DM I find that sometimes my stories need fleshing out and this little book is a great resource for flavor. The author has several tables with very specific flavor text that spark the imagination. When I peeked at the potion section of the book I was tickled by it. Instead of just bland old healing potions you can spice it up with strange looking and tasting potions that do everything from healing hit points to causing the imbiber to grow a beard. There is some very fun stuff in here.My quips and qualms come from what could be called fluff. Some of the tables feel very bland and boring, especially surrounded by such fun and unique tables. Some feel extraneous, like the NPC class table or the climate tables. They are useful to generate ideas but I can't imagine having to roll a d20 to figure out that the tavernkeeper's class is "Tavern Keeper". My other quibble is that there are enough typos to make it noticable. That being said, it looks like a self-published book so in all fairness it looks better than many professional publications.

This book is perfect for Fantasy roleplaying games. I have bought a copy for every gm I know. It is perfect for when you are in a creative funk. I recommend this book to anybody I think needs to hear about it. I feel it is very important to support this artist so that they can keep making excellent products like this one. I have purchased 4 copies at this point and I will be the first in line to support their next project!

The material in this book is great. It goes very in depth into several random generation subjects. My biggest qualm with the Kindle version is that the page only shows up on half of your viewing area. I read mostly on a phone, so this would mean that I'm either stuck using a larger reader or to constantly zoom and unzoom the pages as I read them

Pat's story is totally fascinating. You find yourself following her charmed early life as the daughter of an extremely beautiful & rich socialite mother who marries four times. You are given extraordinary glimpses into the life and the many affaires of the well known personalities of the day as they travel between England & France. However, you really become engrossed in their adventures when they finally settle in Kenya. There Pat is given a tiny lion cub by her lover, a big game hunter. It is this story of the love between her and Tana that the reader will find enthralling & will turn the pages to find the outcome of this relationship.

I loved every minute of this long, long book. This woman, Pat Cavandish and her Mother and silings lived in a way that is unvelivable! I love Africa and have been several times and at different times in history, so I felt like I was there as she vividly describes her time there. Her love for animals made her life complete. One of the nicest things I can say is that, Amazon keeps records of what I like to read and they suggested this book. Thank you, Amazon! Shirley Guyton

I just finished the book The Lion In The Bedroom by Pat Cavendish O'Neil.A wonderful & fantastic read, I did not want to put it down. An incredible very very rich lifestyle in the early 1900's. A wine making family that migrated to Africa. The wealth and sexual lifestyle was in the norm at this time and beyond amazing. It was beautiful and every page was a story on the family pets, from monkey's, to a Lion In The Bedroom. I was so sorry to end the book, I was leading their lives with a smile and love in my heart for these wonderful African people, the incredible animals and a huge smile on my face with the goings on in the various bedrooms, etc. Not a sexy book but the lifestyle at the times. My interest in this book is the author was living in Africa and writing about times in which I was involved in and there is a mention of a friendship between her mother and my step mother in the book so it is very possible that we may have met, however I found the first part of the story to be a bit long winded with all the goings on about her mother. So I flicked through many chapters at the beginning. If I had not been interested in the East Africa part of this book I may have just given up reading it. The story needed to grip you more instead of rambling on about her family.

Excellent book a memoir by a fascinating woman about her fascinating friends and the high life lived in England, the south of France, Kenya and South Africa.

I have such respect for Patricia O Neil. Living in the bush before it became fashionable. Rescuing wild animals and living with them. What an exceptional life! How I envy her experiences.

I don't remember much about those courses, but I'm sure I would've remembered that.In Caesar's Last Breath, Kean will take you on a fast ride through the 4.5-billion-year history of Earth's atmosphere and then through the more than one hundred different gases that comprise the atmosphere today. Yes, more than one hundred. Individual chapters—and "interludes" placed between them—tell tales about each of the major substances. Everybody knows about nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. But there's also carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (N2O, known as laughing gas), methanethiol (CH3SH), and all manner of others. However, this is no mind-numbing laundry list of unfamiliar substances. Kean uses each one as a lever into the history of atmospheric science. And along the way he strays—delightfully—into topics that may be only tangentially related to the air we breathe.In fact, Caesar's Last Breath is as much about the scientists, famous and not, whose discoveries over the centuries have helped us understand the nature and the effects of each of the major gases in our atmosphere. Don't think for a minute, though, that Kean simply offers up the usual dry recitation of each scientist's discovery and how he made it. No. Instead, the author tells us things we never knew, or at least things that I never knew, about these fascinating people.For example, Henry Cavendish, the man who discovered hydrogen, was autistic and "communicated with his domestic staff via notes." He was also filthy rich. "During his lifetime, Cavendish had more money in the Bank of England than any other British subject." Joseph Priestley, the co-discoverer of oxygen, was a Protestant minister whose investigations prompted a mob in Birmingham to burn down his church and his home, hoping (without success) to see him burn inside it. Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, who tried to take sole credit for the discovery of oxygen, was an aristocrat who went to his death on the guillotine in the French Revolution. Lavoisier had been a rapacious tax-collector, and if anybody deserved such a fate, he probably did. And Albert Einstein teamed up with fellow nuclear physicist Leo Szilard to invent a better refrigerator. (They actually invented several and made a pile of money from them.) You'll also meet people whose names you're highly unlikely to know but will probably never forget, including the man who proved why the sky is blue, "the worst poet who ever lived," and Le Pétomaine (the Fartomaniac), who became the highest-paid performer in France for his wildly popular act in which he sang and did impressions by passing gas.Caesar's Last Breath is full of fascinating and sometimes hilarious sidelights such as these. For example, did you know that "[B]efore 1850 people routinely committed suicide rather than face surgery?" (I didn't, and I've read a bit about the history of medicine.) It was only in the mid-19th century that anesthetics—first nitrous oxide, then ether, and finally chloroform—finally started coming into use.Sam Kean's writing style is informal, to say the least. (I don't think I've ever seen the word "catookus" in print anywhere else.) You can easily imagine him talking to you and laughing pretty much half the time. This book is an excellent addition to Sam Kean's catalog. Kean is a pleasure to read. His chapters are accessible, enthusiastic, and informative. This book, like his others, is a carnival ride through history. You will find yourself at turns in prehistoric volcanoes, ancient Rome, 19th C. Europe, and even on a future space mission. Kean chooses these scenes to explain masterfully what might otherwise be some difficult science. In particular, the section on Caesar's last breath tickled some memories for me of a droll college math course, but with Kean at the helm, I found the exercise interesting -- even entertaining -- and thought provoking.I am already looking forward to his next book.

This could be almost be a novel. Sam Keen has spun a technical subject with the skills of a novelist and given the whole view of the gases of the planet a new life. I found the 'Notes and Miscellanea' added immensely to my enjoyment of the book and hope that others who might be reluctant to read this a "too technical" will take heart and enjoy the path through the molecules that we all need to continue life

Sam Kean has written several books covering nonfiction topics that are as diverse in their subject matter as you can imagine yet he does so brilliantly with a breath of knowledge for each one that is remarkable. In “Caesar’s Last Breath”, he tackles the daunting challenge of covering the complete contents of the air through out the existence of the planet. He takes us back to the beginning when the Earth was in its infancy recounting the the story of the changing atmospheres that evolved to our present day gaseous ingredients. The story is informative and interesting. Then the story takes a turn to the more grim realities that exist because human beings have fouled the atmosphere with most notably radiation and greenhouse gases. Kean doesn’t think much of our chances to remedy our blight and because of this the book becomes a little depressing but perhaps necessary because it is honest. What about the title? Do we in fact have any experience with Caesar’s last breath? According to Kean, there is a significant chance that we do. Since there are a bazillion molecules in each breath we take and those molecules become diffusely distributed over the globe with time, there is a good probability that a few of the molecules in Caesar’s final exhalation are lingering close by. Every breath you take has in it the history of the atmosphere which we share with all those past, present and future. The book will give you a clearer understanding of the air that is our home which we breath and live in and make you realize that we haven’t been especially good at keeping it clean.

This is a very interesting book that anyone with even a modicum of interest in science would enjoy. I had long heard that anyone who takes a breath today would also inhale at least one molecule of air that Julius Caesar breathed. I found affirmation for that in this book and a lot more.

This work provides factual basis for the discussion of suitability of the geological set up at the mountain. also, there is some, albeit limited discussion of the technical aspects of nuclar waste storage (glass packs ect.), but only in the context of the storage at the site. excellent book, full of well explained facts.

very informative book

I work in the field and yet, I found the revelations in book to be disturbing. It is professionally and objectively done. It is not an alarmist call to action, but rather a thoughtful description of what has been done, what is being done and what could be done about high-level nuclear waste.
