Working through this book right now, and want to believe this will "work" for me, but as the author points out it's a long, arduous process that can't be rushed with no short-cuts, so I can't tell you if I am successful. Her writing style could use less words to make her points, but the content is valuable. This is the second book I've read by her, because the first was written for health care providers to address patients who might have eating dysfunctions (either too much or too little) and enlightening the providers unfamiliar with possible common background among such patients.

If you struggle with emotional eating and have suffered through years of yo yo dieting, this book is guaranteed to help you get closer to eating the way you know you are meant to. I keep it in my room in plan sight so I can go to it when I feel I need some guidance, and someone to tell me I'm not messed up, and what I am going through is understandable. Koenig also makes you feel hopeful.I am not saying after one read through your eating issues will be resolved, but if you read it and then use it as a manual for help, and you re-read some of her advice, it will definitely help you get closer to being a normal eater. This is a process (just like developing disordered eating was a process), be patient, and read this :)

The author, an expert in the field of Disordered Eating, sheds valuable light on what she calls "Normal" eating. Pay close attention to those quotation marks, because she's not talking about the way most people eat. It's not that kind of Normal. Normal that isn't in quotes (i.e., what we see most people doing all around us, and we may have grown up with) would be unhealthy processed or take-out food, consumed in excess, which seems to be how most people eat. She's referring (in my opinion) to SANE eating, mindful eating, intelligent eating, which is the reason for the quotation marks. It's eating in accordance with how the body was designed to take in and metabolize nourishment. What would be normal if we were not surrounded by food we don't need and constantly being urged to eat. Eating sanely, and with awareness of why we're eating and what we need, requires an intelligent way of THINKING about food, and that's what she provides here. She helps the reader assess the questions, "Am I hungry?" "What do I need?" "How much of it do I really need?" "Is this smart?" "What do I really want?", etc. So buy the book and remember that "Normal" means Sane, not the crazy kind of eating we see so much of in people who let the advertising industry tell them what to eat, and feel obligated to "clean their plate," and eat way more than is healthy for them, just to be sociable.I've learned a lot from Karen Koenig about what she calls "Normal" eating and I call Sane Eating. Same thing. Eating to nourish the body and soul (chocolate has its place in our lives), not to abuse them.

Karen writes a wonderful book to help disregulated eaters learn to listen to their bodies, trust themselves, and start a journey toward healing. I have tried SO many diets and frustrated doesn't even begin to describe how I was feeling when I desperately googled for help. What I found was a path toward normal eating and sweet relief from the horrible cycle of dieting. I recommend this book to anyone who has tried a diet and had it fail. Dieting wasn't the right path for me and it took me way too long to find my way. I started with this book and read all of Karen's other books as well. This gives you a step by step "guide" to learning how to get in touch with your hunger, figuring out how your body tells you what it needs, and most importantly, what to do when you want to eat but you KNOW you aren't hungry! Usually there's something else going on underneath that hunger and this book helped start me on a path to understanding my needs more clearly. I highly recommend!!

This book has changed the way I eat, and how often and the reasons behind my eating. I've been a "grazer" forever. This book made me look at that and at the feelings I have that I usually turn to eating instead of dealing with those emotions. It's a great place to start for people that have poor eating habits or emotionally eat, and what to be more normal.

This is a wonderful book. It was recommended to me by my nutritionist (shout out to Ginger!) and it has been so enlightening in many ways. It touches on many things I already knew about eating but has much much more that is new for me. Most important for me is it's simple yet in-depth approach and guidelines for looking at and understanding my relationship and irrational good versus bad moral judgments about foods. I initially rejected that I had a moral viewpoint about food until I opened my mind and read, thought about, and reread this book. I particularly like this book as it can be picked up and put down and then returned to. It isn't necessary to read it cover to cover. In fact that was not working for me at all. I needed to read and reflect to be really receptive to all the author was saying and then I could apply it to me and my life. This is one of those books that will always be part of my life's little reference library - a TOP 10. Am I a normal eater? Not yet. However I am moving there and most importantly I believe I can be a normal eater and now I know normal eating when I see it. The author makes no promises that it is easy or that one will become a normal eater or when that will happen. However a lot of help and direction and hope is provided in this easy to read and easy to understand book.

If you are looking more for a psychological assessment for yourself and to dig into why you eat the way you do, and more so why you feel the way you feel, then this is for you. I wasn't wanting to psychoanalyze myself, just get tips and exercises to know what real hunger feels like, eat more mindfully, etc. This isn't totally what I was looking for, but a small section does address specifically what I was cloaking for. If you are looking more for practical applications of mindful eating tips, look elsewhere.

Understanding Context is a sort of wunderkammer of humanistic study. I would recommend it to any intellectual explorer and adventurer who is seeking to understand how understanding works. Hinton weaves together a tapestry of theoretical perspectives about cognition, language, and place along with his own observations about how the world is arranged so that it is understood by all who inhabit it.Hinton's writing is accessible, but not dull; occasionally abstract, but not impenetrable (thanks to the clever models and images throughout!). I would especially suggest that college students and graduate students studying design, writing/communication, and engineering pick up Understanding Context. As a recovering academic who researched design and was trying to make my way into actually practicing design, I was really thankful to read something that seemed to model how I could use my analytical research skills in the context of IA and design practice.

Not only does this book detail the key elements of context and the information architecture needed to go about designing for it, we are also gifted with a return to the true intent behind the concept of affordances. Hinton gives user experience designers and information architects a new lens on how we as humans derive meaning as we interact with the things around us in the digital, built, and natural world. This understanding offers a more fruitful way to go about design and assessing the goodness of our designs.I like the balance of conceptual underpinnings and present-day specific design examples, all presented in Hinton’s engaging style and turns-of-phrase.This is a book I wish I'd had back in school for the way of thinking about affordances and meaning through acting. I consider it a vital reference for going about design projects now, as a UX/IA practitioner trying to facilitate meaning in our world of pervasive devices, IoT, networks, digital agents, spatial/gestural UIs, and whatever else the future holds...

I loved reading this book. I work with data and figuring out how to best use it and describe it. This book has a permanent spot on my bookshelf because it explains why context is important when dealing with data. I appreciate how the book provides guidance on how to approach problems and I find it helps me do my job better. The book contains practical use cases which all help illustrate the ideas. I find myself incorporating the ideas presented some months after completing reading it. Using sources from a wide variety of disciplines is fascinating since it all leads to how we extract meaning from our daily interactions with information. I especially liked how city structures and planning, storytelling, and data management are all mentioned. Those seemingly unrelated topics are all a part of how we understand our world and how we make our way through it.After reading Understanding Context, I feel I have a better grip on how the use of data is complex. There is a glut of information in our world but it is not longer scary to figure out the context for the information.

The book is intended to inform on the subject of context with regards to websites, mobile apps, and digital information, but I found it useful and educational in ways I hadn't thought of. Really worth reading if you work in the tech space, or any role that requires you to understand the perspective of other people = it really opened my eyes to some fascinating concepts that I now reference daily.

Mr. Hinton references the following quote: "In the Universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between there are doors." — William BlakeWith that quote as our shared context I will say that this book is a door to knowledge that will allow an entire generation of digital designers to more properly consider the context in which their work is used. This book is easy to read, but also full of important academic concepts more designers should be talking and thinking about in this messy cross-channel world. Hinton’s writing is like attending a master's program in Gibsonian psychology while having the smartest kid in class sitting next to you explaining what the heck is going on in everyday language. I applaud O’Reilly in bringing this work to the world and Mr Hinton for pouring his heart into writing it.

Understanding Context is a ground-breaking book. Much in the same way that the foundational texts on information architecture integrated concepts from library science and wayfinding into existing design practices in order to help designers untangle messy websites, Understanding Context interweaves concepts from cognitive science, linguistics, and psychology into the design of pervasive digital environments. The end result is a perspective that leads designers beyond just building interfaces and helps them focus instead on building understanding. This is a meaty book that rewards mulling over. Hinton pulls material from a wide variety of sources: books, websites, social media exchanges, blogs, listserves, cinema, virtual worlds, talks, personal correspondence, the natural world, and the built environment. He then does the hard work of sorting through this remarkably broad body of literature and experience and threads the resulting insight into a lucid, engaging narrative.Understanding Context is not a “methods” book. Hinton offers lots of examples – and more than a few practical tools – but his overall focus remains on helping readers understand why certain techniques, approaches and tools are effective (or not). Where many design texts offer quick glosses of foundational concepts (such as affordance or invariance), Hinton takes the time to take these concepts apart and show us how they work (and how they work together). As a designer and researcher – and someone who’s simply curious about his world – I enjoyed this book a lot. It gave me a ton to think about in the reading of it, and has given me a ton to think about since.

This is an interesting book for those interested in adding a remembrance of the role of the woman to their Pesach seder. However, it very much revels the "anti-men" sentiment of many feminists in that complaints are made about the "all male" celebration of the seder (which was never my experience) while admitions are made that some of the seders organized by women are "all women" and even little boys are not permitted to attend -- reference "Sanctified by Ritual" by Phyllis Chesler (pages 213 to 220) and "Pluralism in Feminist Settings" by Martha Achelsberg (pages 229 to 234). How can women complain about "male only" anything when they exclude men because "some women are uncomfortable praying with men"? Is it not possible that some men are uncomfortable praying with women? Is it possible that some women think that men do not suffer from discomfort in the presence of women? As a woman, I believe that having some degree of separateness between the genders is a good thing -- but it must be a two-way street. Women must allow men their separate times as well as setting aside some rituals for themselves. Women are different from men. Women do not experience life in the same way as men. Women have a different approach to the religious experience and that difference should be recognized -- and celebrated. Perhaps the mechitzah is not such a bad thing -- and perhaps the Orthodox should recognize 10 women as consisting as a minyan separate from a male minyan of 10 men without recognizing a mixed minyan.

This book, together with its companion, The Women's Seder Sourcebook, is a wonderful, wide-ranging compilation of beautifully composed thoughts, rituals, readings, and reflections by women from across an incredible spectrum of backgrounds. The two volumes represent not only a culmination of over thirty years of growth in the Jewish women's movement but can also stand alone as works that capture a breadth of Jewish women's voices at this particular moment in history. The books are equally suitable for the Jewish professional and the Passover novice. No matter your age, religious affiliation, or political ideals, these books contain a multitude of readings that will resonate for you--and countless other readings from which you will learn and expand your understanding of the Passover holiday. I recommend them strongly no matter where you are on your journey through the wilderness.

I didn't know as much as I would have liked about Passover, and these books were extremely helpful in becoming more familiar with it. Finding new perspectives on the traditional story and ritual was an exciting way to go about learning, and it really helped me connect to the holiday. In addition, the books just provide a great take on women's roles and accomplishments today. I would recommend this book and the Women's Seder Sourcebook to everyone, whether you have thought a lot about Passover and are looking for fresh insights, or are just starting out and looking for meaning in the traditions of Passover.

This book is ostensibly about the inherent limits of scientific knowledge, but actually provides an excellent summary of what is known (at least in physics) and traces its development from the Greeks onward, in the process of identifying these limits. One limit arises from the cosmic horizon of 13.8 billion years, before which the universe was opaque to radiation, implying that we can never receive information about regions further away than 13.8 billion light-years. Uncertainity at the sub-microsopic scale is due to the quantum weirdness of knowing only the probability of a particles's location until it is measured, the inherent uncertainty of that measurement and the entanglement (action at a distance) between particles Early Western philosophers looked for a unified theory of the nature of matter. Thales (600 BCE) thought "all stuffs of the world were but different manifestations of a primal stuff, the embodiment of a reality always in flux". Parmenides, somewhat later, wrote "that what is can not change, for it then becomes what it is not". According to Lucretius (50 BCE), Leucippus and Democritus thought that all things were made of unchanging atoms moving in a void under various forces, assuming different shapes and forms under different forces by the reordering of numerous atoms. Aristotle posited a bottom-up natural arrangement of his four basic substances--earth, water, air and fire--to explain why a body moved up or down when displaced from its natural place. As the author notes, scientific inquiry is an ongoing process, implying an ever-changing perception of reality. Aristotle's version of physical reality dominated western thought until Galileo, Kepler and Newton in the 17th century turned to measurement of physical phenomena and the construction of natural laws to explain those measurements, thereby constructing a new version of physical reality which was embellished over the next two centuries, notably by Maxwell's introduction of the electromagnetic field. Then, early in the 20th century this classical version of physical reality was shattered by Einstein's replacement of Newton's force-at-a-distance concept of gravity by the warping of space, and the quantum theory of Heisenberg and Schrodinger raised issues of how to understand the fundamental laws that govern physical reality. The author provides an enlightening discussion of the many fascinating aspects of 20th century physics, from which he concludes that there may be inherent limits to what science (physics) can say about physical reality, and these limits are more than just limitations in technology. Many physicists, myself included, would stop short of this conclusion, noting the author's earlier statement that scientific inquiry is an ongoing process, implying an ever-changing perception of reality.

Providing an overall reflective survey of mankind's incremental probing and discernment of physical reality, this book is remarkably readable for motivated non-scientists. It is generally well composed, and the text and ideas both flow smoothly and plausibly. Moreover, this book engenders a sustained if not escalating sense of awe regarding the evolved state of knowledge of the physical sciences, together with an appreciation of the enormity of its enabling contributions.Regarding the book's title, the expanding island/shoreline metaphor is apt and well elaborated. Here the area of the island associates with the body of extant knowledge, and the shoreline with the accumulation of unanswered questions. From the shoreline, the waters loom as the unknown, and even some of the unknowable, against the horizon of the marginally knowable. Beyond the horizon lies the strictly unknowable, as proscribed via physical constraints. Notably, the island of knowledge is not composed solely of scientific knowledge, as the author admits other ways of knowing (which lie outside the scope of the book). Plato's Allegory of the Cave is also invoked to characterize human limitations in discerning reality. As an interesting twist, the cave wall, onto which human access to reality is projected, affords enhanced perceptual resolution concomitant with the increase in extant knowledge. The book is divided into three complementary parts: the cosmos, matter, and cognitive faculties. I found the first two parts to be excellent and most insightful, but the third part seemed rather weak and not well integrated into the foregoing parts. Seemingly, the book's treatment of cognitive faculties is directed at limitations regarding human prospects for dealing with the potentially knowable. Here, binding limitations associate with intellectual tools like mathematics, and constraints like those imposed by Godel's Proof. Thus, some cognitive limitations apply to scientific inquiry in general. Aside from these absolute limitations, each individual investigator has personal perceptual horizons that tend to occlude or distort the apprehension of what precisely is known, what is potentially knowable, and what questions are in consequence entailed or answerable. Apart from inherent limitations on what is knowable per considerations of physics then, there are cognitive limitations of either an essential nature or an incidental one.Furthermore, these three parts of the book do not reflect a "shifting scientific worldview" (p. xiv), at least in my construal; rather, these foci have been more or less contemporaneous since antiquity. Instead, the distinguishing shifts largely associate with the progression of four understandings of the phenomenon of gravity: Aristotelian, Newtonian, Einsteinian, and that of quantum gravity. This progression is quite well developed in the first two parts of the book. Moreover, this progression now yields to the prospect of a pending "new physics (that) needs to explain how...the physics of the very large meets the physics of the very small. This is the realm of `quantum gravity', the marriage of the general theory of relativity with quantum physics" (p. 72).What especially held my interest in the first two parts was the well integrated and highly readable exposition of the key controversies and discoveries in the physical sciences. The text read well and the ideas flowed smoothly. This coverage was augmented by relevant notes on shifting worldviews, contributions/speculations of principal figures, and the author's remarks/insights. Regarding worldview transitions, the current protracted puzzlement and dissensus with respect to the interpretation and full assimilation of quantum theory receive insightful treatment, albeit one necessarily with a less than satisfying closure. Basically, the radical yet demonstrated aspects of quantum physics of action-at-a-distance and quantum interference are deeply disquieting and obdurately problematic for many in the physical sciences research community. This demonstration is nicely described in Chapter 26, wherein the author undertakes to "discuss Bell's theorem and how its experimental implementation shows that reality is stranger than fiction." Here, the `extraordinary' prevails in several experimental cases, which show the violation of Bell's inequality in consonance with the quantum predictions.Accordingly, a still emerging worldview will somehow have to rationalize and accept "how nature behaves at the shortest distances", i.e., action nonlocality and measurement nondeterminism. In consequence, there is now major research emphasis on the foundations of quantum physics, as in the phenomena of pair entanglement and superluminal interactions. Meanwhile, derivative technologies like semiconductor devices and quantum computing are nonetheless exploiting quantum effects, if only on an as yet exploratory basis.Among the interesting sidelights regarding the actual research pursuits of quite a few historically prominent figures are their somewhat prevalent investigations into alchemy or the occult. Newton, for example, was considerably involved in alchemy, and J. J. Thompson in occult endeavors. Alchemy, moreover, is seen as sort of a precursor to modern science, although it eventually discarded such subject matters. With the demonstration of quantum weirdness or the `extraordinary', however, it would seem that such discarding may not be altogether warranted, at least rhetorically. As a non-specialist in its subject areas, I nonetheless really enjoyed this book. Its content was very illuminating, largely in that it clearly explained and integrated matters with which I had been somewhat familiar but inadequately informed. Despite certain of my reservations, like one cited above, I believe this book to be a solid Five-Star selection. Further, Professor Gleiser's writing would suggest that he is an agile, spellbinding, and compelling lecturer.

The author gives us an honest view of why our knowledge is limited and will remain so. He feels us that our search for understanding will expand our view of reality, but we cannot pitch our tent on the conquered territory because we are nomads in perennial search of new lands.I liked this book because it tells a credible story of what is possible for us. Understanding our limitations is the first step to understanding our possibilities.Marcelo Gleiser is a trustworthy guide to travel in uncharted lands.

A very accessible "state of the union"(or disunion) in Physics. Like many my math skills are embarrassingly weak but I do enjoy a good physics read. This book doesn't hit you with a ton of formulas, the analogies used to describe things such as Quantum Mechanics, Superposition, Entanglements, &c. were very well done making these oftentimes difficult to understand concepts understandable. If you are looking for a page turner that attempts to bring you up to speed with the current effort to unify the laws of the very large and the very small you will be pleased with this book. Anyone reading at a high school level will find this book easy to understand and fascinating.

Amazing read, especially given that she was 60 and went alone on a bicycle.

Ms. Dervla Murphy, an intrepid and brave woman, takes us on a bicycle journey in Southeastern Africa (Kenya to Uganda to Tanzania to Malawi to Zambia and finally Zimbabwe). We experience these countries via her bicycle and her opinionated eyes.I did some cycling in North America when I was much younger; Ms. Murphy is doing this at the age of sixty on roads that are far tougher than anything here in North America – many of her roads were unpaved. She definitely has an iron constitution! The vitality of this book is the many different encounters the author has with groups of people – many of them very poor. Her trajectory, which she did in the early ‘90’s, takes her through AIDS ravaged areas. She did not know at the beginning of her journey that AIDS was to dominate every conversation she had. There are remarkable discussions which ensue revolving around the epidemic, the role of women, the use (or non-use) of condoms, polygamy, and Africa’s growing role in the world. Some of the people she meets have had their entire families lost (or in the process of) to the AIDS epidemic.Because she is cycling and a woman, she is anomaly. The cycling puts her on an eye-level contact with everyone. What is very reassuring is the needed and unsolicited assistance she gets, now and then, from the most destitute of people – male and female. It is sad to think that since this book was written over twenty years ago, most of the people she met have likely died. This is a very worthwhile book for the diversity of encounters and the energy of Ms. Murphy. She must be high octane!Page 235-36 (my book)Outside, the schoolboys came crowding around the window above the sink... to observe me sitting on the draining board – the only space available.“They are amazed”, said the Chief, “because we talk together socially. Our tradition condemns this mixed-sex talking, we say it leads only to misbehaviour. Men and women have nothing in common to discuss, they live in different worlds. But we know you have another tradition.”

Since 1964 Irish writer Murphy has been traveling the world by foot and bicycle and writing about her experiences. An outspoken loner, drawn to the more remote parts of the globe, her beautiful but rugged experiences fascinate and educate the armchair traveler - without inspiring similar ambitions. As a 60th birthday present to herself, Murphy undertakes a 3,000 mile journey through Eastern and Southern Africa on her Dawes Ascent mountain-bike, "the cyclist's equivalent of a Rolls-Royce," named Lear. The trip was a "self-described unwinding therapy.....a carefree ramble through some of the least hot areas of sub-Saharan Africa."But "carefree" it is not, though nothing - not heat, torrential rains, hunger, illness, hostility or impassable roads - can stop her.Murphy is greeted in Nairobi by drought and a mothers' hunger strike which rapidly degenerates into a riot when paramilitary troops arrive to disperse the women. Leaving the city as quickly as she can, Murphy contemplates the contrast between Western luxuries and construction projects alongside the shanty towns and hungry children. From her first stop in a dusty village for a Tusker beer, AIDS predominates and a pattern is set which endures thoughout the lands and cultures she passes through during the coming months. By day she enjoys the solitude and scenery of rural Africa; by night she is embroiled in local discussions of politics and Western incursions and AIDS, often dodging individual pleas for help in getting to the land of opportunity - the West.Ukimwi is Swahili for AIDS. In Africa, wherever she goes, it surrounds her. Some blame Western conspiracies and medical experiments; missionaries preach behavioral changes and deny condom distribution; men say they cannot survive without a variety of female partners; wives say their husbands refuse condoms; prositutes say they would have no business if they insisted on condom use.Everywhere Murphy meets widows, orphans and more orphans. She at first resists the pull of AIDS. For her this is a pleasure journey and she can do nothing to slow the epidemic. But it has become part of the fabric of culture, threatening traditional family life, taking the most productive and leaving behind the old and the young to fend for themselves. In addition to the scourge of AIDS, Murphy finds much of Africa suffering from economic collapse, spurred in large part by misguided Western "development projects" that destroyed the local agrarian economy, often displacing the people and departing, leaving behind devastation and tribal strife. She meets hospitality and hostility, and takes what comes; be it a bedbug, mosquito-infested tourist hotel, or an earthen floor, or a spontaneously offered bed in a local home. She sets out at dawn hardly knowing whether to expect a corrugated wartorn road or spectacular mountain scenery or a beguiling path that ends in a swamp (through which she is guided by a silent tribal elder). She pushes Lear up rutted mountain tracks and hurtles down, marveling at the African cyclists she meets everywhere - man cycling, two children on the cross bar, wife behind holding baby and toddler, and a heavy load balanced over all. With a cast-iron stomach, she eats and drinks whatever is available (which is generally awful), especially enjoys her beer, cycles through bronchitis and is finally felled by malaria. Even that she comes to regard as fitting - ending her journey in Zimbabwe where "Blacks had been subjugated as nowhere else in British Africa." Murphy concludes that Westerners ought to get out of Africa once and for all - that Western systems have not "taken" and have only undermined traditional culture.Whether you come to agree with her or not, her harrowing, thrilling, eye-opening and heartbreaking journey will stay with you when other travels are long forgotten.

This book does many things well. At times its a fascinating series of anthropological interviews. Then it's a sentimental travel guide: marvelling at landscapes. Or it's double barreled feminist advocacy. And it has good historical backdrops and provocative philosophical musings on development and politics in Africa.Dervla takes no prisoners in humorously highlighting flaws in herself, elitists, traditionalists, expat development bandits, and ambivalent White Africans. Having conducted research and travelled in Africa over many years, I found her questions, naive mistakes, and ability to adapt to situations amazing. I recalled learning to love nshima in Zambia in 1984, as there was seldom anything else to eat. I recalled being hassled by immigration officials for travelling with "too little foreign exchange to support myself." And I relived the horror of having a corrupt border patrol officer pocket my passport and walk away.Dervla had the fortitude and charm to come out on top every time: perhaps taking advantage of her privileged/vulnerable status as a woman tourist from Europe. I had to use different tactics as a long-term resident who's an African American man. I bought this book on a lark for $3 at the World Bank Bookstore. I'll be back for more copies. It's a shame that it's out of print.
