Congressman Ken Buck is a Republican from Windsor, Colorado who serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Rules. I always knew things in DC were a mess. I thought it was just partisan gridlock. Wrong! It is a perversion of everything you always knew about how our government is supposed to work. Do you believe you have representation in Congress? No, you do not. Do you believe congressmen wrangle out a budget? No, they do not. This book is a long list of things that don't work the way they are supposed to in ways you never get to hear about. These are not topics that show up in the news. Another reviewer complains about a lack of proposed solutions. In this case, they are obvious. Want a solution? How about following the rules?

Everyone should read this book, no matter what your political affiliation is. The book makes it clear how the culture of Washington needs to change. The author is Republican but he pulls no punches on how his party contributes to the problems.

This is an excellent book that details the immoral, unethical and corrupt behavior of many of our elected politicians in Congress. The book focuses on the actions of Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, since that is where Congressman Buck sits, I suspect there is plenty of sleaziness on both sides of the aisle as well in the Senate. The sad thing about books like this is they attract readers who already agree with the authors' premise. The writer is preaching to the choir. Both Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives should be seething with moral outrage over Congress's unwillingness to make the tough decisions and do what is in the best interest of the country. The authors' solution is for the states to petition for a convention to draft Constitutional amendments for items like congressional term limits and a balanced.budget. This method has never been successfully used.to amend the Constitution.All amendments have been introduced and passed by congress before going to the states for ratification. It will require a nationwide grass roots effort to make this happen.

First the disclosures. Ken Buck is my congressional representative and I voted for him in both of his campaigns. I am also a lecturer on political science who teaches courses on congress. Finally, I don't usually read these type of political commentary books, but was intrigued after hearing REP Buck on local radio.Having said that, this is two books. The first half is good tell all about the current norms of congress. This is the better half. Most congressional memoirs are not published until the member is out of office. And then they tend to be a recounting of the members time or a collection of their speeches (a way to bypass campaign contribution limits). Taking a completely different direction, REP Buck goes into the details of the money game within Congress. Unlike most accounts which is how leadership uses money to increase their power, he shows how leadership uses committee assignments to garner money for the party in what can only be described as a massive extortion scheme.The second book is the normal listing of how to change things in Washington. None of these are particularly new. Most have been kicking around Washington for a number of years with little or no success.So I recommend you read the first half and scan the second part.

Buck is a congresman from COLO and is known as an honest and ethical person as opposed to Cory Gardner and Michale Bennett - CO senators who are so corrupt they rot when they walk and talk. This book names names, gives details (some "cardinals" should be named) cites events and shows the dirty corruption that exists in BOTH parties. Buck mainly focuses on GOP as he is a GOP and knows it better but come election time, those RINOS and corrupt self serving slugs in congress that serve only themselves should fell our wrath! This book makes the need for a CONVENTION OF STATES needed ASAP and term limits on congress! Too much power are in the hands of those who could not care less about Americans and only about themselves. This is a 5 STAR book - get it. You will NOT regreat it! THEN GO VOTE!

A good read, but, the typos and grammatical errors geez, especially later in the book, it's like they gave up. Otherwise an interesting and emotional take on the music and social politics of the time period.

I am really enjoying this book. Stuart is doing a deep dive into the Detroit soul music scene including the environment that created the scene.

This is an incredible book about some of the most important events of music history and American history in general. Cosgrove goes month-by-month through the calendar, explaining what was happening in Detroit music at the time: key events like Florence Ballard's departure from The Supremes, the July riots, the duets of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, the eventual departure of the songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland from Motown. It's true that there are a few inaccuracies and inconsistencies, but none of those seriously affect Cosgrove's narrative or argument. They're the type of thing that having a better copy editor would have fixed. He's planning two more books, Memphis '68 and Harlem '69. I eagerly await those! But include a more extensive bibliography, discography, and notes next time!

Very good. A good book for people who were not familiar with the riots and motown

Book is filled with inaccuracies. I grew up in Detroit and graduated from High School in 1967. I was very familiar with what was going on at that time. There were multiple instances of wrong street names, confusing 12th Street & 14th Street at one point. Identifying the Sheraton Cadillac as the Sheraton Chrysler. One of the characters in the book was described as living next to the Hamtramck Poletown Assembly Plant when it wouldn't be built for another 15 years. Claiming Jimi Hendrix burned an American flag when it was actually his guitar. Hendrix never burned an American flag. Numerous grammatical mistakes. Cosgrove seemed to try to fit events into 1967 that were from later years. Much of the material on the MC5 was from 1968 & later. John Sinclair was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1969 and the Free John Sinclair show in Ann Arbor with John Lennon didn't happen until Dec. 1971. Timeline for some of the events of the riot were not correct. I would often have to put the book down as it made me so angry with the mistakes. It's very obvious that Cosgrove's Detroit is only one that he read about. I doubt whether he ever set foot in the city.

Great read, full of stuff I didn't already know/hasn't been covered (Motown) ad nauseum. Would recommend for any music fan. Can't wait for the follow-up, "Memphis '68" to come out! (it also has a few typos, but nothing to affect its accuracy)

Stuart Cosgrove has written a deep cut sort of book primarily about Motown, but one that takes the time to explore the paradox of an art form that worked beautifully in the midst of personal and sociopolitical nightmare.The recent Kathryn Bigelow film about the â€œAlgiers Motel Incidentâ€ covers some of this ground, rather controversially, but without the music in the foreground. Cosgrove risks ridicule by proposing in page after page that the firing of Florence Ballard from the Supremes parallels what was happening in the USA during 1967, but his general thesis is convincing enough, that the Detroit riots, and the gradual professionalization of Motown, split the city and the music industry into ranks of caste and social class, so that Berry Gordy and Diana Ross wound up leaving Detroit behind for the greener pastures of LA. Stuart Cosgrove has a firm grasp on the history and politics of Detroit, and he loves him his Motown, but at some points one has to wonder if a black journalist might not have been able to serve this material better, just as Bigelowâ€™s film might have been better with a black director? But he can certainly spin many narrative lines at once! For the first time I was able to put it together about the many deaths that plagued Motown during this tumultuous year, and the tragedies such as Tammi Terrellâ€™s onstage collapse.How is it I never knew that Marvin Gaye began writing his landmark 1971 LP â€œWhatâ€™s Going On?â€ in 1967? (Berry Gordy, his brother in law, tried to dissuade him, telling him he was a pop singer and people didnâ€™t want pop singers jawing about such hot topics as police brutality.) At the back of all the stories we hear not only about racism and economic violence, but we hear always the echoes of VietNam and the protests against an unjust war.Cosgrove breaks this down month by month, and goes even further by assigning a general topic, sometimes an impressionistic one, to each chapter: August is â€œOrdeal,â€ and September is â€œSurveillance,â€ for example. This novelistic method works best as a way to tell the story of oversized people, like Gladys Knight, or weird Gothic urban tales like the Algiers Motel murders. Oddly enough, there isnâ€™t enough about the music here. What was it that made Motown so infectious? Itâ€™s almost as if Cosgrove avoids employing much critical vocabulary in order to avoid the fanboy drivel that plagues so many 33 1/3 books, but he goes too far in the opposite direction. And he overuses a couple of favorite adjectives, especially â€œtowering.â€ Theyâ€™re all of them divas in this bookâ€”not only Diana and Martha Reeves, but people like Aretha Franklin and Leni Sinclair. Cosgrove shows how, as the year progresses, anger and despair gave rise at Motown to a new, rockier sound, one with psychedelic edges, and here his hero proves to be the songwriter/producer Norman Whitfield. But in every chapter there are a few Motown singles which you and I have never heard of and he describes them with enough grace to make you want to find them instantly. So I had quite an education reading this book.

I really am enthusiastic about the subject and read the text with interest and frequent enjoyment and it sent me back again and again to listen to the music which is always a good sign. However I cannot think of any book I have read which is so crying out for a decent editor and a proof reader. Did no one perform either or both of these essential tasks? I cannot comment on the accuracy of the information in the text as a previous reader has but really the amount of needless repetition of facts/information became really, really irritating. There were frequent typographical errors, extra letters, wrong words etc, which too often made the text read like something poorly translated from another language! And as for the punctuation... such frequent use of the comma splice made comprehension rather difficult at times. When a full stop to end a sentence properly is required then that's what is used, not a series of commas. Detroit 67 is so clearly a labour of love on Stuart Cosgrove's part that one has to wonder what went on that resulted in the publication of this terrible mess of a book.

Donâ€™t let it get around, but have you noticed that a lot of the middle grade fiction books out for kids this year (2019) are horrendously, incredibly, shockingly depressing? I mean, you get a bit of that every year, but 2019 appears to be shaping into something particularly dreary. Thereâ€™s a running gag amongst my librarians that if you run across a novel for kids between the ages of 9-12 and at least one of the parents in the book isnâ€™t dead, check the publication date because it probably came out last year. For the most part, the books Iâ€™ve encountered have dealt with grief. Grief and death and guilt and a smothering sense of helplessness in a cold, cruel world. What can we read into that? Well, the times in which we live arenâ€™t exactly fodder for cheery fare, Iâ€™ll grant you. Youâ€™ve got ideologues pandering to humanityâ€™s worst instincts, war, bloodshed, addiction, malaise, and worse and worse. I guess for a lot of authors of childrenâ€™s books thereâ€™s a temptation to just sink into that feeling and draw from it. Ultimately those books find that tiny, gold, gleaming bit of hope in all that darkness. But if kids are anything like me, theyâ€™re going to get sick of that stuff pretty quickly. Hereâ€™s an idea: Why not take the idea of a world gone mad and give it a jolt of lightning to the veins? Set your book in another era when America went a little crazy, then liven things up with spies, car chases, murder attempts, gunshots, traitors, double agents, and thatâ€™s just the first few chapters! A book for the kids that want to read a response to our age that will thrill them to the core, and maybe plant a couple of seeds of rebellion in their craniums at the same time.For Jake, life is simple. His father disappeared during WWII and the boy is fairly certain that means the manâ€™s a P.O.W. with the Russians. Someday Jake will fly into that godless Communist country, find his father, and save him. In the meantime, itâ€™s 1953 and the Cold War is in full swing. One day, Jake comes home to find that his mother has rented out the attic to a strange man named Shubin. A Russian man, no less. Convinced that Shubin is a Communist spy, Jake wastes no time in investigating the clear criminal. Unfortunately for him, the more Jake digs into the manâ€™s life and dealings, the more dangerous things become for him. Is someone is tailing Jake all the time? Why is the FBI speaking to him during school hours? Is a man with gold teeth really staring through his bedroom window at night? And why, oh why did Jake steal those airplane plans out of Major Armbrusterâ€™s car? The more answers he receives the stranger things become, until Jake must face unspeakable truths about the country he loves and serves.I was talking with a colleague the other day about what makes a childrenâ€™s book memorable. Letâ€™s say thirty years pass and you still remember the name and plot of a book written for kids. Why? What makes it stick in your brain? For me, a good childrenâ€™s novel is one that isnâ€™t afraid to get weird. â€œHarriet the Spyâ€? Chock full of really weird people and elements. â€œThe Westing Game?â€ same story, only you set it in an apartment complex and you get to know the cast of characters better. And to this list I would add â€œSpy Runnerâ€. It doesnâ€™t start off weird, initially. When I thought it was just some safe little story about a boy coming to terms with McCarthyism I felt Iâ€™d heard this tune a couple times before. This is all â€œThe Loud Silence of Francine Greenâ€ territory, right? But then I got to the scene when we first meet Jakeâ€™s new border, Shubin. Jake has come home to find his momâ€™s car precariously parked, one of her shoes still inside and the other one in the grass, the front door partly open and her purse on the doorstep. When he comes inside his mother is barefoot, laughing, bantering with a strange man as she angles a large trunk down the stairs with him. From that moment forward, this high tenor of weirdness imbues the text. Like Jake, you know somethingâ€™s going on, but you arenâ€™t sure what the nature of it is yet (though, as an adult reading a childrenâ€™s book, you can probably guess).Yelchin, born in Russia and who left the Soviet Union when he was twenty-seven, should not be read by new American-born childrenâ€™s authors. Why? Well, if a man can live twenty-seven years in another country, then come to our own and, in the course of things, write better and more succinctly than so many of the Yanks I read in my daily work, thatâ€™s could be depressing to a debut writer. For me, thereâ€™s always one moment in a well-written book for kids that wins me over. Makes me fall in love with the book. In the case of â€œSpy Runnerâ€ itâ€™s a different scene, a little later, between Jake, Shubin, and Jakeâ€™s mom. Theyâ€™re in the living room and something is â€¦ off. Jakeâ€™s mom seems expectant. Jake is paused. Shubin isnâ€™t doing what the mom wants or expects, and Jake has no expectations but he can feel this odd tension. Itâ€™s like watching a scene from a Eugene Oâ€™Neill production. Just the below the surface of the niceties, something strange is brewing. For Jake, and for the reader too, thereâ€™s an increasing sense that no one in his life is telling the truth and no one can be trusted. How many childrenâ€™s novels, like this one, choose not to give their heroes confidants? Too few.Iâ€™m also a sucker for a killer line. That sentence that turns all the ones before it on their heads. Listen to this: â€œTrudy Lamarre had beautiful red hair and eyes that made him stutter: deep, dark brown eyes. Jake despised her.â€ Or how about this description later of his mother. â€œHe looked at her thin fingers, white from grasping the purse; at her small, delicate ear; at the side of her face; and at a thread of her hair the color of roasted chestnuts, shaped like a question mark hanging upside down.â€ Or even, quite possibly best of all, this moment when Jake accidentally discovers Shubin in his motherâ€™s bedroom. The two of them, together, are trying to guide a moth out the window. Itâ€™s innocuous, but both Jake and the reader have the sense that theyâ€™ve just witnessed something incredibly tender pass between the two people. "He lifted his eyes to the ceiling, where their shadows swayed together as if dancing in time to the sound of the soft hollow tapping of the moth and of his heart beating hard against his rib cage and wanting to explode."Of course, I guess the best evidence that Yelchinâ€™s a good writer is the fact that heâ€™s managed to write a whole book starring a protagonist that is very difficult to like. Jake, put plainly, is an idiot. A friend of mine remarked after reading this book that if adults ever wanted to, they could make a drinking game out of every time Jake nearly meets his demise (donâ€™t try it â€“ youâ€™d be passed out before you got to Chapter Seven). But what you dislike about him is, to a certain extent, his surety that everything heâ€™s been taught about America and Communism and spies, is true. Itâ€™s only when he begins to lose his grip on this certainty that you start to like him a little more. Before that, heâ€™s just a dolt. Still, even an idiot can be sympathetic if heâ€™s treated unjustly, and Jake gets a bit of that. Youâ€™re also rooting for him to either confront or escape the dark forces tailing him time and again. Even if you donâ€™t wholly like him, you want him to win in the end.When I was in high school my French class had us read a fairly simple novel over the course of several weeks. And the plot of this novel appeared to be perfectly calibrated to bore me, specifically, into a state of catatonic malaise. It was about thwarting spies who wanted to steal plans for military planes. SNORE! The degree to which I didnâ€™t care about French teenagers solving crimes could only be matched by the degree to which I didnâ€™t care about jet schematics. For this reason, I am going to grant Mr. Yelchin some extra points for actually making a reader care about this sort of thing. I mentioned earlier that the book is exciting, sometimes shockingly so. Though there isnâ€™t anything in the least bit supernatural about it, you still get this otherworldly feeling when strange, exciting things start happening. About the time Jake spits out a tooth from a fall, youâ€™re all in.I would be amiss if I didnâ€™t mention Yelchinâ€™s photography. Yelchin has mentioned that film noir has had a bit of an impact on the writing of this book, and indeed he holds a graduate film degree himself. But the photographs that grace the text donâ€™t resemble film stills (though they rely on many of the tropes, particularly â€œThe Third Manâ€) so much as they do photographs taken on the sly. I once saw, and very much enjoyed, a Bill Morrison film called â€œDecasiaâ€ constructed entirely from film footage that had deteriorated over time. The photographs in this book feel akin to that movie. Where Yelchin chooses to blur, to deteriorate, to stress, or to wear down is carefully considered. The end result is that even the most innocuous image, like that of a marching band coming down a street, feels vaguely nightmarish. The innocent and everyday are rendered untrustworthy through Yelchinâ€™s gloss. But they are also, and I mean this truly, beautiful, wonderful photographs. You could hang them on a gallery wall and no one would so much as blink. When Yelchin illustrated M.T. Andersonâ€™s â€œThe Assassination of Brangwain Spurgeâ€, it was the first time Iâ€™d encountered an unreliable visual narrator. When I look at the photographs in â€œSpy Runnerâ€ it is no longer a question of reliable and unreliable. It is literally a question of whose lens youâ€™re looking through.In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about how one of the many roles librarians can choose to fulfill is to act as educators to children and patrons about truth and facts. If we can teach people that not everything they read on the internet is true and comes from a reliable source, weâ€™ll be doing a public service. At one point early in the novel Jakeâ€™s teacher mentions that you canâ€™t believe everything you hear on the radio, a statement that shocks the boy considerably. Already, the children of the early 21st century are, like Jake, learning that they must be canny, be clever, and question everything. Complacency can be put aside when you start to get a glimpse of what youâ€™re up against. For these kids, theyâ€™ll want a book thatâ€™s unafraid to talk about the price of truth in a world that relies on understood lies. Yelchin isnâ€™t mapping the era of McCarthyism on our current times. Heâ€™s holding it up to the mirror of where we are now, showing us the similarities between the eras, and asking what weâ€™re going to do about it. More of this, please, Mr. Yelchin. a single sentence on each page with 5 page turns and it's done. after the full-blown Pout-Pout Fish, am disappointed in the story and overall length of the book. will be good when my granddaughter begins reading in a couple of years.

Not much of story or illustration compared to the original. Overly simplified. My 8 month old adores the original, but hates this one. I don't blame him, I can't even get through it myself because it's so awkwardly dull.

Granddaughter loves this little book about the pout pout fish. I tell her to put on her happy face when she pulls this book off our bookshelf. Great for her little hands to hold too. Love when she tries to read it herself after hearing it about 100 times!

I bought this book for my 2 year old who absolutely adores the original Pout Pout fish book. She still likes this one but not nearly as much. It is much simpler than I expected with only one very short sentence per page compared to the paragraph a page in the original book. Definitely take a look at the editorial review section on amazon for a better idea of what the pages look like (this wasn't available when I purchased mine)

I was disappointed in this book. The rest of the series we have read had a lot of story to it, this had very little. However it still carried the same price tag as the larger books.

My older grandson loves the pout pout fish. I saw these were smaller so they were perfect for my 1 year old grandson. It's his favorite book!

We love reading the pout pout fish books to my daughter in the nicu. They are so fun to read, the rhyming flows very well. This book is much shorter than the original pout pout fish book, however. But still a cute, fun little read.

We are Pout-Pout fans and the youngest member of the fan club (1 1/2) loves the pictures and page turning. He now has his own book as we go over the longer version and he can turn pages back and forth. Everyone enjoys. Thanks for coming up with a simplified version for littler folks.
