This novel is a well written account of a man searching for his inner peace. His bold journey gives great insightful into the physical, mental, and spiritual obstacles that one will encounter during a substantial solitary journey to find one's self. I find his interludes to be profoundly perceptive and have helped me in my personal journey to know myself and become a better individual.I read One Man's Wilderness before this one which I thoroughly enjoyed however I didn't find it to be as spiritually insightful as this novel. This novel is VERY VERY deep and I feel I'll need to read it a few more times in order to fully to extract all of the lessons and information in this book.If more people in our society stepped away from the distractions that bombard us all day ever day and learned more about ourselves, I feel this world would be a much improved place. Kudos to this fellow and thanks for the guidance.
1) Didn’t like his unpreparedness (wrong staples? Brought solar panels but didn’t know how to use them? Doesn’t know how to tie up his boat in a storm? Went miles the wrong direction despite having a compass? Etc., etc.).2) his treatment of Cat was highly abusive. Beating a cat, throwing it in a puddle, dunking it, kicking it, feeding it only rice and punishing it for trying to hunt bids? Kept hoping it would improve but never did.3) the entire premise was faulty. Was he trying to find solitude to connect with nature or was he trying to endure and overcome ordeals? Very different objectives.4) instead of eliminating distractions for a deep dive into his psyche through meditating he created busy work and read a lot.5) he learned nothing because he was too unfocused throughout the entire process - from planning to execution.Bottom line is the author came across as a self absorbed bully who depends on everyone else (his girlfriends, the Navy, etc.) to help him spend a year vacationing in the wilderness and learning nothing. Not one member of our book club had a single positive thing to say about this book, most couldn’t finish it.
"Solitude" is a profound odyssey of self-examination. It is astounding in it's courage, perseverance and candor; utterly frank and sometimes uncomfortable. Kull records, day by day, every aspect of the practical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual experiences that he had on his remote Chilean island for a whole year alone. While very few people will ever do what he did, let alone write about it, his account is absolutely universally relevant to any reflective, sensitive, contemplative person no matter where or how they live. "Solitude" is very real indeed. Kull is a mad bastard to have put himself through it all, the living and writing of it, and for that I wholeheartedly thank him.
This book took me 2 years to read as I would often pause for thought for days before returning to it, but it is well worth the read for anyone who has ever felt a hunger or curiosity for solitude, with an interest in psychology and philosophy. I loved how in tune with nature he became towards the end of his time in the wild, and the way he described the environment around him was what kept the story most intriguing for me at times. I expected the changes in his perspective, but it was great how raw the author's accounts were over time.

Daring. Thought-provoking. Kull's year in solitude is wonderfully documented and so interesting to follow. He truly endured an amazing adventure, one I feel fortunate to read about and learn from.
Kull's intimate, unashamed account of a year spent alone on a harsh Patagonian island was full of suffering and mental anguish- for the author and for me. Intrigued by the premise and hoping for an insightful payoff, I persisted through hundreds of pages of tedious details and monologues rehashing fear, doubt, and depression, occasionally punctuated with peace and understanding. The epilogue is the most valuable chapter, but the entire journey is fascinating in retrospect. I recommend this book for the comprehensive lit reviews on solitude and meditation, as an unconventional example of doctoral scholarship, and as an honest examination of how our need to find meaning can lead to unexpected clarity when we are ready to accept that we will never have all the answers.
I just have finished book Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes. I want to say i have been deeply moved by it. The deepest impression left, is an impression of courage. Moving alone to Patagonian isle requires strength of character, but what I find even more daring, is writing and publishing so deeply personal book.
