The book was a meandering journey sometimes confusing as it flashed back in time than went forward through the factors that contributed to the character of a man. Sometimes I felt great kinship as O'Reilly is a man of my generation -a baby boomer. I related to the working class upbringing and the cultural references gave me a chuckle. We boomers wanted to change the world in a good way. I, too, was the first woman to graduate from college. His honesty was a brilliant flash here and there. Would like to have read more of that brief struggle with humility. Values and character should be our take away. Flawed as a man? Yes of course but a bit muzzy in the character self analysis. Self awareness is not one of his strengths. Change too self absorbed for that, but moving toward the light. Prompted me to think of writing my own reminiscence of that era.
Having said that, I will offer that I, too, am a private person and keep my personal and professional life at a distance from one another.First I must admit that I initially assumed that the title implied that 'bold' and 'fresh' were adjectives used in a self-congratulatory kind of way. It soon became apparent that it was meant as an admonition by the strict authoritarian figures who were Bill's early mentors. To be clear, Bold was not something you wanted to be perceived as in a classroom run by a nun. Fresh... even worse still. It implies a sense of disrespect for the authoritarian. Both traits, however, are needed more than ever in a society that has done it's best to stifle and destroy independent thought and critical thinking.I was especially pleased for an insight into the mind and persona of O'Reilly. I don't always agree with O'Reilly on his opines, but I always respect and admire his critical analysis and professional apoproach to topics he covers. I appreciate the way he holds to task those who are less than straight forward with their agenda and actions. This is a good read that will inspire you to be more involved in your world and reveal the cards of those who would abuse your best interests.
Wasn't sure that I would like this story but was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed it. Bill tells about his life growing up. It really is fascinating that he has made his life from very humble beginnings. I would most definitely recommend this book .
Love the guy or hate the guy, he tells his story in his typical fair and honest way. This book gave me valuable insights into who this man is.I have a blunt yardstick I use to judge humans on this Earth: You either make the world a better place or a worse place. If you make it better, you're on my team. If you make it worse, I don't want to have anything to do with you. This book reinforced my opinion that O'Reilly makes my world a better place. Is he an egotistical so-and-so? Yeah, probably. But that doesn't stop him from fighting for what's right. I'm glad he's on my team, because I sure wouldn't want him for an enemy.I bought the Kindle version of this book to read it on my Amazon Kindle. The experience was so positive that I bought the book (and the Kindle!) for my mom for Christmas.
I knew from watching his show that Bill O'Reilly has a very dry, sense of humor, to put it mildly. This ebook is just an affirmation. I could not stop listening. The humor in this is priceless, but it is even more so if you were raised in a very Catholic home and went to a nun run parochial school. But even for the non-Catholic, you can't help but find the humor in his exploits. Brought back many great memories of my Catholic school days! Very, very enjoyable and a far cry from the political scene now. Thank God for this book. Bravo, Mr. O'Reilly!
Loved his book Old School and I had to read his bio. Laughed till I cried....great read!!
"Bold Fresh" is a quick and enjoyable read. Let me say up front - I'm a fan of Bill O'Reilly and have read most of his other books. If you are a fan, chances are you will enjoy this latest book as well. If you are not a fan, and can put aside your reflexive hatred of the man (sorry - had to get that tweak in...) you can gain some valuable insight into what has led Mr. O'Reilly to where he is today.Unlike most of his other books, "Bold Fresh" is a personal narrative that explores many of the events, people, and experiences that helped shape O'Reilly's world view. While there is ample discussion of what the world view is (much of which will be familiar to anyone who has read "Culture Warrior"), what I found most interesting where the personal anecdotes and stories that have provided the foundation for those beliefs. O'Reilly is not known for sharing details about his private life, so I found this opportunity to hear about his experiences in Catholic school, his first teaching job out of college, and lifelong friendships to be very intriguing. The book is a very quick read and if I have one complaint it's that I would have liked to have heard more about O'Reilly's life - especially his early career in journalism. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to see how O'Reilly's went from Catholic School rabble rouser, to hard-nosed journalist and voice for the "folks". He writes with a no nonsense and not overly sentimental style that reflects the self confidence and courage of conviction that viewers see every night on "The Factor". In fact it's hard not to hear O'Reilly's distinctive voice and delivery while reading these pages.Overall, I would give this book 4 stars. It was well written, informative, but I was left wanting a little more. Fans of O'Reilly will be satisfied, and detractors (if open minded) will still find inspiration in his rise from humble beginnings to powerful media commentator. Of course - many will just continue to hate O'Reilly because he is outspoken, opinionated, and very successful. That's no spin - just the truth.
Having grown up on Long Island and a product ofCatholic grammar schools - I know where Bill is comingfrom. However, he pats himself on the back more thanis necessary.
