It says I read this years ago but for the life of me, I can't remember. Sad, really. ANYWAY this is a definite must read series. Action-packed, full of adventure and I like the MC. The idea of her friends being with her in the outer world was fascinating, but they didn't get to be there all the time. I suspect they'll be used more in the next book, and that maybe this was more of a way to introduce them into their important roles.I was so happy to see Rune again XD But his reaction gave me a heart attack! The big reveal was shocking just as well, and damn. It made me so mad, I could spit. I felt so bad! But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.I liked the writing style, though I got impatient at times and skimmed to the action and teasing romance. I'm glad this wasn't too romantic, but that it had enough to satisfy my romantic streak.
Where to start.... I think I can pretty much sum up my experience with this book by saying that I read it in its entirely in a day. By this, I do not mean that it is a fast, easy read (though it's not Faulkner - thank god) but rather, I couldn't put it down.To be fair, I do think that Haven was a better, in some ways more thorough book. BUT, and this is a big but, I still loved Dragoon. It was an excellent sequel and I really am excited for the next book. If Dragoon had come first, maybe I wouldn't feel as strongly but because it was GOOD and followed something GREAT, I really can't complain.Also, I will proudly admit to being on A.R. Ivanovich's mailing list to I knew as soon as Dragoon came out AND I GOT IT RIGHT AWAY! It's pretty cool how the cover art ties into the book too.But let's break it down simply:ROMANCE: as with Haven, this wasn't by any means the main focus of the book. (Though Rune and Kat are both pivotal characters and their relationship and trust is key to the plot) In Haven there is also only one significant kissing scene (spoiler: Rune and Kat) and that's just about it. I really don't see this as a problem. I think that it makes the story more interesting because it's all about how to love and feel for someone without pawing at them. I usually think it's kinda nice when there's a little something spicy but here I really didn't mind. There is a lot of tension and at some points you want to shake them both but hey, they are young and dumb.ADVENTURE: There's plenty of that. From Kat's misadventure in Haven that ends up with her packing up and heading back into Rune's tragic world to her friends following her across and getting sucked into a world-wind adventure that takes them, and the beautiful but crappy Dylan, across the world and right into the Prince's keep. (sorry for the run-on sentence). We meet the gorgeous but sassy Carmine who pilots the ship that spirits Kat around. We also finally get a taste of what the Prince's are like and just how deep the rabbit hole goes. There is an intense battle and it does get pretty sad but in the end, things fall into place (in a more or less good way). I would say that Ivanovich definitely succeeded at the adventure aspect.STEAMPUNK-NESS: We've got corsets, pistols, flying ships, odd/evil mechanical contraptions, spyglasses and steam engines.... need I say more?So in short, I loved it and I was left wanting for more. I don't know if I can make it another year....
According to Goodreads, this book has two different titles. This one is called Paperglass, the other one is called Dragoon. Both are titled as book 2 in The War of Princes series but they are the same book. I chose this one because this is the only one available on Amazon.This book totally threw me for a loop. I wasn't expecting the turn it was going to take. The supporting characters take a more prominent role in this one. Which really makes this story deeper. I mean, even if they didn't have more spotlight time the story would have been great, it just added that extra layer to the story though, ya know?The stakes are higher, the love is deeper, and the magic is more powerful. We learn more about the politics of the both worlds in this one and the author adds more world building as well; making this story really come alive to me. The first book was great, this one was better.I'd like to point out that I loved how the author was able to change her characters temperaments and make me believe it. This is a tough thing to do IMO. I can't wait to see what adventures Katelyn and Co. go on in the next book.
I'm very happy that I decided to keep reading this series. I had some issues with the first book. Even though I thought the characters and world building were great, the pace lacked rhythm for me - it was too slow and the information was chewed in.But boy, this one got better!! The pace is great, one plot twist after the other make it impossible for you to put it down. The characters continue to be wonderful. I love Kat just as much, and Rune, and Kyle, and Ruby, and Dylan, and Sterling, ... and I could go on! They are fantastic, multifaceted characters that completely surprise you in all the best ways. The world is expertly built and amazingly rich. It's what fantasy is all about for me!The one thing I would say that I really hated - and I hope Ivanovich keeps her promises and reads these reviews - is that I was about to (eagerly) buy Monarch when I read that it is not the final book! There is a fourth one and she doesn't even know if THAT will be the last one! I felt cheated! As much as I love this story and these characters, I hate to start reading a book when the last one is not out yet. And I hate stories that drag along, making us eventually hate what we loved in the first place. And that is why I won't read Monarch now, and will only do it after I'm sure the fourth one is the last. And I sincerely hope she does this amazing story justice and give it a proper, strong ending.
