About the Author

Diana Grenfell is co-founder of the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society and a life member of the American Hosta Society. With her husband, Roger Grounds, she is former co-owner of Apple Court, a British nursery specializing in hostas, daylilies, and grasses. Diana has done much to raise the profile of hostas throughout the world, broadcasting, lecturing, and writing many authoritative books and articles on the plant. Her garden in Gloucestershire is home to a National Plant Collection of miniature hostas.

For all you hosta addicts out there (& surely you know who you are) this is a wonderful pocket guide for all those trips to the greenhouses, looking for that "just one more" plant!This book starts with an overview of hosta botany, then dives into over 800 plant descriptions arranged in alphabetical order, naming size, growth habit details, leaf descriptions, light & moisture requirements, pest resistance & other factors for successful growing.Did I mention the 302 GORGEOUS hosta pix? This pocket guide's small enough to tuck into the car for that weekend hosta hunt! Or park it next to your favorite chair with a cup of tea. If you're like me you'll be needing blank paper & pen too for that list of "must have" hostas.Happy hosta hunting!

I moved into a new house and knew i wanted to use hostas in my shady areas. I bought this book after checking it out at the library. It has soooo many color photos and great descriptions. I used it to choose about a dozen different hostas to buy. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about hostas and is a visual person like me.

This book is well organized and concise. It features more than 800 hostas with 302 photographs. Included are many new cultivars. It can easily be taken with you when visiting nurseries. This is an excellent book for the new gardner as well as the experienced collector. Among the information given is a glossary of terms and an easy index. Regarding individual hostas, it gives an approximate size and habit, a complete plant description, as well as comments regarding light requirements and location for optimal garden usage. This book has become a constant companion.

Thank goodness there is a book with so many pictures for a source of reference for Hosta plants! Once you start collecting Hosta, you will find them to be addicting. I sometimes forget the name of a Hosta when the label is lost and this book helps to identify the plant agiain. These plants are so much fun with so many names. Thank you Diana Grenfell and Mike Shadrack for putting this book together

I have to finally admit to a failure. Timber Press caught my eye, Pocket Guide was the seller, but for myself interested in species Hosta, this book was a serious let down. Little to no information concerning species, their cultivars or hybrids. Good for the Novice gardener, but advanced gardeners should move on.

I continue to like hostas more and more. They are so 'durable', easy to grow, provide eye-candy and dress up landscaping. I have more to learn, though, so this will help a lot. I bought it on the strength of positive feedback from other buyers.

This is a wonderful little book. Excellent photos, and qutie comprehensive. However, it is not intended to be a treatise or all-inclusive book, so of course it doesn't have every last detail about every hosta every registered. It's portability is espcially appreciated, as it can easily be taken along on hosta hunting expeditions. Highly recommended.

Another book that will go to my grave with me. It is so wonderful to leaf through in the cold, gray winter months. I was a hostaholic before I got this book and it just keeps me addicted and happy.
